He'll liven it up for sure but Detroit is still such a depressing park for him to play. It's like he went to the AL Pirates. Javy should have as big a platform as possible

Their opening weekend was well attended, and then it turned into an abandoned building yesterday

I don't know for sure what the weather is in Detroit, but on the west side of the state it's been in one of those stupid gray areas where it's not quite freezing but it's too cold to do anything outside for extended periods.

So basically the same as Chicago, outside of a couple nicer afternoons. We have a family lake house just north of Elkhart and generally the weather there is a little better than here. I keep checking the forecast there as the weather stays depressing here, hoping for any warm up so we can bring the family out for a few days, but still nothing.

Anyways, Baez is the best and I miss him a lot.

More Union, like 15 minute drive off exit 96.

The general feeling out there seems to be 'lets move on' and that's completely fair, but thought these comments from Javy were interesting:

https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/cubs/javy-baez-cubs-talks-we-were-5-days-getting-it-done

If not for five days in 2020, that trade deadline, this season’s roster, and the competitive outlook for the Cubs in the short-term might look completely different.

“I thought it was going to happen,” Báez told NBC Sports Chicago. “We were five days from getting it done. And then the pandemic hit.”

“It was really, really close,” Báez said. “More than anybody thinks.”

Sounds like the 'biblical losses' caused the Cubs to back down on previous extension talks.

Article also mentions that after Bryant extension talks went nowhere in 2016-2017 it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would leave and there wasn't much discussion after that. Last offseason they tried to get something done with Rizzo at a discount but rightly so it went nowhere. This tracks with what we've known, just further confirmation.

After 2020 Baez also was another year older/closer to FA, played at a sub-replacement level in the shortened season, and Theo left the front office. Lots of things were different if and when they re-engaged prior to 2021.

6 years / $140M. Cubs dodged a bullet

No doubt. He may rebound a bit, but this is the trajectory I feared Javy was on, but even worse.

My sentimental side wanted him to stay, but that contract is going to be a disaster for Detroit.

And in a few years when they are ready to dump him on the cheap and pick up a good chunk of the remaining salary, I'm all for bringing him back.

For as bad as everyone says Javy is now, he's still worth about 2 wins this year. Granted its almost all defensively and there are concerns about the bat moving forward but some people are acting like Javy is the worst player in baseball this year.

He has also raised his average ~40 points and his OPS was 100 points higher in the second half

So on Baseball Reference his OWar is 2.7 and DWar is .3 but his overall WAR is 2.3 with a positive DWar how is his overall WAR lower than his OWar? Isn't that...unusual??
