180 minutes in Mesa: Inside Dexter Fowler's surprising return to Cubs

love this from joe:

12:30 p.m.: Joe Maddon talks with reporters and shares that he nearly sent Fowler a congratulatory text regarding his signing with the Orioles.

“When I heard about it, I was ready to text him and congratulate him, and then I was told not to do that,” Maddon said with a laugh. “So I didn’t.”

Late but damn I'm so horsefeathering happy about this. He became one of my favorite recent players last year. Love that guy being a Cub, and it gives us even more certainty, depth and options. They just keep making this team better, it's unreal.

I've seen some inane debates on this board over the last 12+ years, and this one is right up there with the dumbest of them.

My issue here isn't so much caring about who said it or anything like that, but being completely flabbergasted at people thinking that that is somehow Theo talking.

Theo is a white guy from Boston. I feel like a few people have forgotten this.

You can clearly hear Theo yelling 'My constructed roster is wicked pissah!' in the audio.

This post has won the thread. Shut it down, mods.

2013-2015 Fowler OPS:

Versus Lefties: 870

Versus Righties: 733

Unless there is genuine concern over Heyward's ability to play Center Field Fowler should be platooning with Schwarber, not Soler. Soler, at his very worst, should be more than capable of putting together a righty OPS of around 733.

Mind you I'm not against this signing at all, as Fowler will be a definite asset against lefty starting pitchers (and provides a bit more speed to a lineup that needed it). I just question choosing Fowler's 733 righty OPS over the upside Soler provides.

The first time I watched that clip, I thought it was Fowler. After watching it a couple more times, I think it's Theo. Why would Fowler say, "Ya'll thought this [expletive] was over, [expletive]?" That sounds like Theo just beating his chest a little bit. He knows he's killing it.

Christ. This really isn't even debatable.

David, please don't use the Son of God's name like that. Ironic that you are so hung up on who said a profanity and then use something extremely profane.

Thanks.

Don't assume that everyone does (or should) believe what you believe. This isn't a church.

Thanks.

The Orioles just come across as so unsympathetic. It's not like they rolled out the red carpet for Fowler, professing their undying love, and he left them standing at the alter. They were trying to bargain shop at the end of the offseason with players who were already coming at a discount, negotiated through the media to try to gain more leverage and then took a hardline stand at the slightest bit of give and take negotiating with the players.

Yeah, they're lucky Gallardo still signed with them after they played hardball with him. They probably feel emboldened because it's the end of the offseason, but trying to bulldog players isn't a good look.

On the other hand, I don't blame them for not giving Dex an opt out. Their farm system is not in great shape and I can understand them not wanting to give up another first round pick for one year of a non-impact player.

All I said to my wife was that piece of halibut is good enough for Jehova.

Also, I'm not that fired up about Fowler. I like the signing though.

It's not so much being fired up about it in and of itself. It's just that it says so much about this team.

Just when I think I read the stupidest argument in NSBB history, this thread continues to one up itself.

I"m still here waiting how to continue on with my life after I found out that there was a possibility that Starlin Castro did not write that article for The Players' Tribune himself.

Slightly off-topic: I sometimes wonder if Theo and Jed are actually massive douches behind the scenes. It's pretty hard to dominate life like that and stay humble. I would know.

I think it's pretty hard to dominate life and be a massive douche. I don't think they are humble but they must treat guys pretty fairly. I think a good case in point is Theo having a beer with Shark.

I mean Soler literally just put together a righty OPS lower than that last season. And that's not even getting into defense.

From Roch's article (columnist in Baltimore):

They're not going to lay it all out publicly. Meanwhile, there's heavy speculation that the Cubs jumped in late, as they're known to do, and the Orioles' agreement fell apart.

lmao people are so pissed because the Cubs are awesome.

Also, I know typical Chicago sports radio drivel, but I heard multiple people on the score speculate that the Cubs might end up being accused of tampering and losing draft picks. I'm pretty sure that until a FA has signed on the dotted line, clubs are able to freely speak with and negotiate with a FA. Idiots.
