So if the US loses tomorrow, we aren't officially eliminated, but it becomes an almost certainty right? Especially because Guatamala and T+T still play each other and would almost certainly play to a 0-0 draw if it meant knocking the US out and both advancing.

If that happens, can you imagine that the USMNT wouldn't have a truly competitive match until 2020? I mean I know Copa and the Gold Cup are competitive but not to the degree that the World Cup is. Guess we'd have a chance to see how good Klinsmann's youth program is, assuming they don't fire him.

Ohhhhh man. Yeah. That's exactly what would happen.

There's no way he'd keep his job if we don't qualify. Him keeping his job would be the only way Sunil loses his, so he'll go.

This isn't going to happen though, right? RIGHT?!

I can't imagine a scenario where we don't qualify.

Is it a situation where not qualifying might be the best thing long term, just to force the US to make changes?

I just don't see how staying completely out of the international spotlight for 4+ years could be considered a good thing for the US even if it means significant changes.

We're not losing and we're probably not even tying.

The last time the US failed to win a home qualifier was the final one for the 2010 Cup, a 2-2 tie against Costa Rica. That was the final qualifier and came 4 days after we clinched qualification.

The last time the US lost a home qualifier was for the 2002 Cup, when they lost 3-2 to Honduras. Since that game, the US has played 28 home qualifiers. They've won 26 and drawn 2 (the other one was in the final game of the third round against Jamaica after we'd won the first 5 and I'd guess we played a bunch of reserves).

They'll win 3-0, they'll roll Saint Vincent on the road and then come back home and beat T&T. This team was in the same position four years ago, won their next three games and then went 7-1-2 in the Hex.

Klinsmann should be gone, but it's not going to happen yet.

Absolutely not. Failing to qualify would be a complete catastrophe for the game here. It wouldn't be a fatal blow, but it would be a massive monetary and prestige blow that would have a far more negative affect than tolerating this idiot for the rest of the cycle.

The best case is we win tomorrow and then get absolutely stomped in the Copa America and go out in the group stage. If we were to go 0-3 with like a -6 GD that *might* be enough to get Jurgen canned.

And we aren't going to lose tomorrow. We may look like crap, and play turgid garbage soccer, but we'll still win 3-1. We won't lose to Guatemala at home.

This is the thing. The central thing. You can't judge JK by individual results or even trends. He deserves to be fired because he exhibits the same failings over the course of 5 years. He should be gone. He won't be because we'll qualify easily. Either first or second in the region. We'll get out of our group in the World Cup. We'll go home and then he'll quit. It's the most aggravating status quo possible and we're all powerless to do anything about it. Thats the reason he sucked the fun out of the National team. It's predictable, it's bad but it achieves status quo despite itself.

When the dust settles we'll have watched 7 years of a team that didn't make any progress at the senior level and unlike former regimes, didn't maximize it's ability.

Also regressed on the youth level. Missing out on 2 straight Olympics and a number of youth WC should create a massive overhaul.

One of my new favorite lazy narratives is that Clint is "past it" and hasn't been good since coming to MLS.

Since he came to SSFC, he's scored 18 times for the NT. He scored 9 goals for the NT in 2015.

I wish all our players were washed up and past it like that. Maybe we wouldn't lose to chump assed second tier CONCACAF countries.
