To the extent I hear anything about tennis, its' Serena, a Eurotrash player or some scandal involving the men's game.

 

Maybe her biggest problem is how dominant she is. The sport would probably be better off with somebody who can be a real rival to Serena.

Might be. Not a perfect comparison, but like with Rousey, I knew of her and knew she was unbeatable. But I had never seen one of her fights. And I had no idea she was fighting the night that she lost until the whole world went insane about her losing. Now I'm actually fairly interested in the rematch.

Plus, Serena's been winning majors for like 17 years. Ronda's career has been....less.

It's not newer. It's two people beating each other up. Nothing new about that. I'm not as adamant about it being a "made up sport". It's just a dumb one.

Anyway, I don't have strong feelings about either sport nor do I have much interest.

 

The point was basically I thought Rousey was this unbeatable behemoth in a female sport. Then she lost and I actually went from being completely uninterested to being mildly interested in the next event. As far as I know, Serena is an unbeatable behemoth (by tennis standards), so I'd probably be more interested in watching a match if I thought she were actually being challenged. The comparisons beyond that don't really matter. Analogies aren't about the similarities in the things themselves but in the relationships between the things.

 

So, again, not a great analogy, but my point was, yes, I agree, if Serena had a legit challenger I'd probably become more interested as an outsider who presently has zero interest, just like happened when I heard about Rousey getting her ass kicked and losing on extremely long odds.
