I'm sympathetic to the idea that it's in the Cubs best interest for Arrieta not to pitch today, but the alternatives are worse. You don't want him to have a huge layoff or two week-long layoffs, and there's not enough days left to avoid that if you skip him today.

I just think you do whatever the bare minimum is to 'keep him on his routine'. For me, ideally it'd just be a simulated game on the side, or no more than 50 pitches or so. With his stats, I doubt he'd want to be going out there with a simplified game plan or anything. I guess I just don't know how much is required to not screw up his schedule. It wouldn't seem like much. If there's a huge rain delay after the first inning and a team has to pull their starter, no one talks about them getting off their routine.

Random Question: For some reason I keep thinking Bryant has kinda a wacky split and its either home/road or day/night. Are either of those the case?

Cards lost to Brewers today, so really in our best interests to let the Pirates win this one.

Why is that in our best interests

I agree. For the longer term view (getting to the World Series), Arrieta dispatching of Pittsburgh in one game is better than 5. The Pirates are better than St Louis.

Man, Arrietta is just sick.

I would seriously be a little worried about showing them too much here though, TBH. Plus I'd really like to see him limited to around 80 pitches.

It doesn't matter how many times they see him; they aren't beating him.

Yeah, there's no adjustment to be made for 92 mph sliders with pinpoint command. Only whiffs and sorrow.

I don't get the thinking that the Pirates can't see too much of Arrieta on Sept 27 because of a potential Oct 7th game, but they just saw him for 117 pitches on Sept 16th.

Edit: Oh and BEFORE this game started, Arrieta has more IP vs. the Pirates than any other team on the schedule. FWIW, he also has the 3rd lowest ERA against them of any teams he has multiple starts against (0.93). He allowed 0 runs to the Mets and Giants in 2 games each.

Some umpire is just gonna run Cervelli while he's not even looking someday, it's gonna be great.
