This piece is amazing: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/columnists/ct-joe-maddon-buys-drinks-sullivan-spt-0924-20150923-column.html

Essentially he wrote an entire thing about how he and other reporters never got their free beer and shots at the Maddon presser. He has stewed over this for months and apparently even had this exchange with Theo that he somehow thought he should include:

Here's an unedited transcript of my interview:

Epstein: "You look miserable."

Tribune: "What about this story you told Dan Patrick that all the media was running to the bar to get the free drinks?"

Epstein: "Yeah, I used some creative license. I was mainly talking about you."

Tribune: "Did you see me take a drink? You didn't see any of us take a drink. Let's clarify that right now. It was taken as the truth."

Epstein: "Who cares?"

Tribune: "I just want you to fess up."

Epstein: "OK, Paul Sullivan is too stupid to take advantage of a free drink. There. It's on the record."

I'm dying.

Why is he the worst?

This is one of the rare times I found him likable.

Do you actually think this is a serious piece? It's completely lighthearted and more of a celebratory thing.

I think he and Wittenmeyer are the only two beat reporters I can't bring myself to follow because of general terribleness. I figured the piece was possibly in jest, but he also strikes me as the kind of guy who would actually be angry about such a thing.

Sullivan is as miserable as Wittenmyer, but I've gotten the impression that his negativity comes from more of a cynical fan type of angle...not like a journalist with an agenda or whatever you want to call Gordo.

He's been pretty positive and praising of the Cubs lately, so I've found him pretty tolerable.

Also, if this didn't make it obvious that it was in jest, COME ON

I've kept quiet for 10 months. But now the Cubs are about to throw the party of the century, and we're still waiting on our shot and a beer.

I hate to make a mountain out of a Molson's, but it's time for Maddon to finally buy that round he promised at the Cubby Bear.

That's the Chicago way.

Also, I like following his instagram.

oh thank god for that.

And I fully admit I had a "whoosh" moment. In my defense, I offer that I've entered the part of my life where my brain doesn't work without coffee.

I joked yesterday that Maddon would have the cheetah freely roaming around the pregame interview like the flamingo.

I am now imagining Gordo or Sullivan casually walking in late oblivious to what was going on earlier and their reaction as a cheetah sprints to greet them as they quietly sneak in.

Even if the article was in jest, that interaction with Theo just seems weird. But maybe I'm oblivious.

I'm pretty sure any Sullivan interaction with other humans beings is weird, but that those that deal with it regularly are used to it.

there's no IF

and if the dialogue is real (which i don't really doubt) that's probably the standard give and take between executive and local writers

tbh the thing I'm most ashamed of here is that Gordo is clearly worse than Sullivan and thus this whole thread is living a lie.

Eh, at least he does some quality stuff in AZ on the youngsters down there. Gordo and Sullivan contribute virtually nothing. I guess Gordo breaks the occasional rumor.
