Hypothetical on Rebuild Going Back 3-4 years...Worth it in hindsight?

Posted
I've loved this rebuild. I never wanted them to try to be ok while they assembled this juggernaut. When Theo took over, we were on the path of the White Sox, Mariners, Brewers, etc. Awful teams that are awful, have been awful, and will continue to be awful for the foreseeable future. They have refused to let go and embrace their suck, and there's no hope in sight. For me, 2-3 lost years in exchange for a sustainable rock'n'roll dong army is a very good deal. And I personally think it's ridiculous to argue that we could have gotten to this point while also trying to compete the past 3 years, given the payroll.

I'm happy with the way things are going, but I think we ought to hold off on calling the Cubs a juggernaut until they actually win the WS or put up great totals over a few years.

You must let go of the hate

I don't understand how correcting the use of "juggernaut" translates into hate.

It's your (seeming) complete inability to kick back and enjoy success under this leadership

if this playoff format existed in 2011, we very easily might not have Theo (and this team) and who knows what we'd have instead.

maybe rick hahn or ben cherington?

Part of me thinks we'd have gone after Friedman. If we missed, my honest guess is we'd still have Jed. My guess is since Ricketts was talking to the Red Sox guys so much back then, Theo would have steered him that way and he would have listened.

The past is the past. Who cares how we got here when we've got here. Why would I let a crappy 2013 or whatever tarnish or ruin my enjoyment of this season?

I enjoy it, but I still get tired of people overstating it.

When I point out the hyperbole used to describe the "juggernaut" that Theo built from "zilch" left to him from the previous FO, it means that I'm a hater and not enjoying the team's success under Theo. I guess it's a case of semantics when juggernaut means the team has played very well for most of one season out of four and zilch means the assets that left/acquired Rizzo, Grimm, Ramierez, Hendricks, Villaneuva, Russell, Castro, and Baez. I've been a Cub fan through a lot of lean years through the 50's and 60's, so when they show any signs of success I enjoy it and certainly don't spend too much time worrying about who's running the FO. As for the (Hendry) haters, were they able to kick back and enjoy the team's success in 2003, 2007, and 2008?

Then why would you even click on this thread?

The title of the thread is "worth it?" Clearly it was worth it, because I'm enjoying them NOW and could largely ignore them when they sucked

I don't think it's too hard to see the holes in this thinking. 2008 therefore justified all of Hendry's tenure, by this logic.

You developed the reputation as a hater by calling them "boy genius" and crap like that. Everything else just reinforces that opinion.

It's weird why people would form opinions around a good 90% of his posts being some kind of halfassed defense of Hendry or trying to temper enthusiasm about the current state of things.

I mostly just want to kick you in the junk for spelling Ramirez wrong EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU TYPE IT, but the rest of your shtick is annoying too.

Not at all. I've been a fan for over 20 years. When I say "ignore them" I mean not watch every game. I've watched as many games as I could this year. In 2013 I didn't go out of my way to watch them. Did I care that they sucked at the time? Of course....it sucked. Do I let that suckitude temper my enthusiasm in 2015? Not one bit

And if the current plan results in the team somehow sucking again next year, I'll care about it then. Not now

Actually I picked up that term (boy genius) from posters fawning over him.

(we've seen it happen but we've never had this many prospects this good - not even 2001-2, Kyle, especially positionally)

I'm going to pick this out unfairly to note, because I think if we're evaluating the Cubs' organization, the pitching situation gets overlooked a lot.

We've run out the third-oldest pitching staff in the NL this year. It would take the most ridiculous optimists to argue that any of our upper-minors pitching prospects had a good year.

Our top four starting pitchers have taken exactly 80% of our starts, and they've had extraordinarily good years doing so. That's not something that's going to happen every year, or even most years. The front office had an amazing year with hitting on almost all their pitching moves, but I don't think their personal histories or the history of baseball in general suggests that sort of hit rate is sustainable.

I'm not saying they've done something wrong to get to this point. I *love* the eschewing pitchers method of team-building. But the fact that the resulting pitcher-thin nature of our organization looms large shows why there's really no such thing as guaranteed sustained success.

Wherever you got it, you obviously used it facetiously and repeatedly over a long period of time

Pierce Johnson has had an extremely solid year. I'm not even sure how that's disputable. Does he have warts? Sure. But if he's in a different org, their fanbases would likely be fairly psyched about him. Bitching about the pitching, when the entire mantra is to [expletive] pitchers is stupid, in all honesty. Especially when there's plenty of hitting to go acquire it.

yeah, consider me not even a little excited about 24.5 year old in AA with bad peripherals pierce johnson
