Lester cannot be starting the WC game for this reason alone. I know Arrieta is the obvious choice to all of us, I just hope Maddon doesn't do something stupid.

Okay so people don't listen to 670 much but just today Bruce Levine was on there interviewed and was asked about this. He replied "Everything I have heard is if the cubs make the wildcard playoff, Lester will get the start because Arrieta has never pitched more than 157 innings and in the playoffs" ..

 

he also said some really funny comments about how Castro is basically never going to be traded from Chicago because of his 200 hit season in 2011 and the fact is that the guy is way better than his performance..

 

Bruce Levine is an idiot, but still thats what HE heard. (re: the 1 game playoff)

 

for the record, I want arrieta on the bump for that game!

This is dumb. Lester is a fine choice to pitch in that game. He's a very good pitcher. Arrieta is a better one, so if he's available, they should go with him.

 

But he can start the game and we should want him to if Arrieta isn't available.

So they should just write the problem off as "the yips" and not do anything about it? I'm no sports psychologist, but there must be SOME way to attempt to address the problem other than ignoring that it exists. The only way I know to fix it is to recite Victoria's secret catalog text.

This. If we ever play an important game vs. the Cardinals, they will do this. I could see Matheny being like the Cobra Kai coach and telling their guys to Sweep The Leg. Let's hope that Maddon is Mr. Miyagi.

The last time you brought this up you said it was because he makes too much money to not pitch big games.

 

What bruce says makes a little sense. Even if you include the minors hes only pitched at most ~180 innings in a season. He's on pace for like 220+ innings right now. But regardless, whats the difference between him pitching a 1 game playoff and him pitching in the LDS?

 

Ideally, the Cubs can continue to stretch their lead and can allow Jake to get more rest in between starts.
