It's hard to tell if it's footwork or instincts. For whatever reason, he doesn't do a lot of body blocks and instead tries to get his glove in front of pitches in the dirt.

true but when richard has no downward bite on his breaking stuff it seems like those pitches in the dirt are gonna skip away to the side like a rock on a pond

Yeah it might not have made a difference on that particular pitch, it's a good example of one of his defensive problems right now though. I couldn't put my finger on exactly what it was and Harry Pavlidis put it that way on Twitter the other day and it clicked.
