i think this is a 100% deserved thread bump after how much he was ridiculed for the idea.

Can we start bumping everything he's been wrong and terrible about in response?

To be honest I think on that weird fly ball in the first or second that Soler called for and then it dropped, if Russell had been at 2B I bet he would've made the play. But the Coghlan experiment did work.

Someone refresh my memory; what was Soler projected to be defensively? I thought part of the hype was that it was all but assumed he'd be fine out there. He's definitely got a cannon, but the routes he takes....yeeesh. And his speed is rough, though that obviously can be due to the injury.

Average to plus based on arm and athleticism, possibly declining as he bulked up.

But minor league defensive projections are pretty much always overhyped, so him going from that to poopy is pretty normal.

rough around the edges but acceptable with a cannon arm

just yesterday i was thinking about your theory on this and then how bryant and russell have done (not that russell didn't have a good rep, but that he has lived up to it and possibly more)

i think it's more like sometimes scouts and people are wrong and sometimes they're right

Weird that so many were adamant Bryant wouldn't be able to handle 3b but has done admirably well

Projecting defense is really hard I guess

You mean Kris "Best Defensive 3b in the PCL" Bryant?

you mean like the one report that said that amid most others questioning his ability to stick there?

are you really going to pretend the consensus on bryant's glove at 3B was that it was going to be very good?

it's because he's goofy looking there and lanky and i guess people focus on things that don't matter that much (like throws that take your 1b into the baseline lol jk)

No, but the main point of my theory was always that the very best reports are the ones that get repeated over and over.

I'm sympathetic to your point here, but Bryant is a horrible example of it. We spent the whole offseason wondering if they were planning on moving him to LF right away or down the line, and he's got a +6 UZR at 3B in his introduction to MLB.

Please don't. He's said way too much dumb [expletive].

There's not enough room on the first page of the forum for that many threads.

he's done well there but any positional conflict was pretty much taken out of the picture completely between castro's complete implosion, javy never coming up, schwarber being babe ruth, etc.

even if he were bad there'd be nowhere else for him to play right now. if we could have a better defensive alignment without sacrificing much offense, i'd still prefer it.
