Because Edwin Jackson's currently being paid $13MM to exist. So why not at least get him stretched out in hopes that he looks decent enough for somebody desperate for pitching depth to bite before we end up paying him another $13MM to pitch for somebody else's AAA affiliate next year?

Because he hasn't really demonstrated anything as a reliever ability, pitch type or selection-wise that indicates his abysmal results as a starter the last two years wouldn't be likely to return. He has actual, albeit slight, value as a reliever right now; money shouldn't dictate that they start a guy.

The Cubs will need to make a roster move for the doubleheader on Tuesday, right? They can add another pitcher. Wouldn't it most likely be Roach? They don't have to wait 10 days to recall him if it's for a doubleheader, do they?

But it should have something to do with it when they're essentially pulling guys off the street for spot starts. And if not Jackson, just go with Wood.

Richard's a long ways away from being the key to the Jake Peavy deal 6 years ago. And judging by his AAA stats, he's basically a left handed Donn Roach. It's not that I have any preference of one bum over the next as a spot starter. I just think that they may as well be as constructive as possible with the innings.

Your excessive hand-wringing over this move would indicate otherwise.

We're getting some value from Edwin in long relief and that's fine with me. "Some" value is a lot better than me wanting him fired into the sun. Just leave him where he is and forget about him.

This question is only mildly related, but is Justin Turner still alive?

You mean Jacob Turner? Headed for TJS, probably.

I appreciate all your posts, X0. But I got surprised and thought NCCubsFan was back based on your avatar. Did you recently change that or am I just slow?

I'm not sure where you're getting hand-wringing. If we were talking a 26-27 year old Clayton Richard, then it would absolutely make sense. But the 31 year old version is a small step above Rodrigo Lopez. Which is great if you need a quick filler for a hole we didn't have.

But my primary point of view is that we're hitting the time of year where while some teams are going to be gunning for front end starters, others are going to be looking for depth. And Jackson and Wood are the types of guys that the latter could use. Even if we could finagle something along the lines of a Corey Black or Jonathan Martinez, that would still make it worthwhile.

It's the day after and you are still whining. That is hand wringing.

I stated my point of view. You stated yours. So yes, we can stop. Enjoy your morning.

A point of view which makes absolutely no sense. "Let's take Jackson out of a role he's been somewhat valuable in, force him back into a role he's been wholly unsuccessful in since the moment we acquired him, in the hopes that he's going to somehow magically start not sucking as a starter, which will cause some sucker of a GM to give us something of value for him."

Yes, WSR, Jackson has been SO bad that the odds of him having any kind of sustained run of success as a starter where the Cubs could possibly get anything of value for him are practically nil.

I wouldn't say Jackson has had much success this year either. Yeah the numbers look good but the Cubs are mainly using him in mop-up duty. Put him back in high-leverage spots and I guarantee you he collapses again.
