So with Wood do we just put this off as Cardinals BS or look to replace him on the roster?

Seriously, can some of you just stop pretending like they're not simply a really good team? Wood is often a bad pitcher and he's facing a good team.

So, we're definitely not catching the Cardinals. I guess we can just accept that but I do not want to have to go into Pittsburgh for that WC game so hopefully this team is good enough to finish ahead of the Bucs.

I'm cool going anywhere and playing anybody this season. Making the playoffs in the first year of whatever we are calling this would be awesome.

Damn right.

Man, Wood is easily the most unlikable guy on the team. Every time he tries to look exasperated, like he's getting squeezed instead of just sucking, it makes me want slap the piss out of him.

Yeah, but I want them to play for the postseason this year. There's no reason for them to not gun for a WC spot, and waiting for a starting pitcher isn't going to help that. If I had to pick I'd definitely prefer the bat, but they've got assets up the whazoo. Time to start actually using some of them for trades like they've repeatedly assured us they would do.

If I had to pick one guy among the rumored names - it would be Hamels. This pitching staff just doesn't have the horses. After Lester the only guy who has pitched a full season + playoffs is Hammel.

That said, the payoff of a deep playoff run for the Cubs will be massive. They should do bat and impact arm, and really kinda have to.

This is definitely the year to do it. The public on a national scale has never been more interested in what Theo and friends have been doing, and I assume they can get bored if nothing happens. Spend some money and prospects at the deadline to make some serious money for the next half decade+ off of a playoff run...

Totally agree with the bold; they need both. That said, both would cost too much, even with the resources they have, so I'd prefer to deal big for a bat and then, hopefully, deal smart for a decent pitcher.

The offense needs to stop being so [expletive] streaky. It's either six runs or one run with the Cubs.

A bat and an arm at the deadline, please. Call up Schwarber in August and we'll be golden for a wild card run. And maybe mental help for the young players who are probably putting way too much pressure on themselves to perform.

Josh Reddick or AJ Pollock big?

Man, I'd love either. Plug either one in LF and let Schwarber focus on sticking at catcher. Gamble on Baez being able to have some kind of turnaround when he comes back up and go with whatever you can get starting pitcher-wise.

I'm too classy for such savagery.

I almost never care about announcers, but holy damn, Harold Reynolds is effing awful.

It's like he can't even fall into being right even once.

Verducci and Rosenthal could provide some quality analysis if given the chance, but Harold hasn't stopped talking since the game started.

Carlos Villanueva really has a 1.17 ERA and a 3.86 FIP in 30 innings. And you just know it'll stay like that.

If only the Cubs had someone like that guy.

Now that's a good one. I'd love to know the last time any Cub outperformed any peripheral stat to that degree for any significant length of time.

Actually, it might have been Carlos Villanueva last year
