Marmol had 39 more strikeouts than Mark Buehrle in 2010. Buehrle pitched 210 innings.

At one point in like June of 08 Marmol was 2nd in the NL in strikeouts, which was completely bonkers.

Yeah, I remember something like that happening. Didn't he set the record for K/9 in 2010? I think Chapman or Kimbrel or someone broke it, though.

He would work out at my parents' gym in the offseason. Got to meet him once, gave me and my brother and autographed 8x10 and ball. Genuinely nice guy.

This isn't the first time that things have gone well for the Cubs in a game and people like Ski and DiamondMind have suddenly stopped posting after nonstop bitching for the whole thing.

I fell asleep :(

I had to look up Kevin Foster and ended up on Kevin Foster the murderer, who basically looks like keener and Kyle mashed together.

kevin foster won the first game after our 0-14 start in 97, so i loved that for some reason

i also spent that whole year thinking about how many games it would take us ot get to .500

i was an idiot

I always rooted for Geremi Gonzalez for some reason. He was that guy I always hope was just about to put it all together.

yeah i was convinced he was gonna be a stud. another RIP guy. it's really unbelievable how many mid-late 90's cubs starting pitchers have died (+ beck). jaime navarro and jim bullinger better watch their backs.

do you guys remember pat cline?

supposed to be the stud catcher that would come up with kerry wood (according to the cubs quarterly i brought home from my first cubs game, that is)

don't think he ever even saw the big leagues.

Tyler Houston was another cant miss guy. The Cubs were miserable at drafting for about 10-12 years.... BUT PEDs definitely made it a lot harder to be accurate. I don't think Mike Piazza being drafted as last round pick as a family favor by Lasorda would realistically happen today.

[expletive] guys remember when we were 5 minutes away from adding Mike Piazza to that 98 team?!?

Who was Hendrys last draft pick? Brett Jackson? Between him, Veal and Brownlie - that's the reason why we had losing seasons these last 5 years.

Remember when the Marlins added Piazza and traded their entire team to get him.. Bonilla, Charles Johnson, Gary Sheffield.. And then said "oh [expletive], he's expensive, let's trade him to the Mets for a bunch of young guys." If memory serves me, they got Preston Wilson among others.

I never realized Houston was a #2 overall pick. Not by us, though. Atlanta.

i think they traded for him with every intention of trading him very soon

There was another one I was looking for, where Piazza said he got a call with his agent telling him to pack his bags for the Cubs...then he took a shower and when he got out, his agent called him saying he was going to the Mets.

There were some real idiots in the wrong roles in baseball back then.. I'm sure the same holds true today, but technology and elimination (for the most part) of PEDs has made it a much more scoutable sport.

Time will tell, but my suspicion is that's wishful thinking. Scouting and especially projecting prospects is just as crazy and difficult as ever.
