That list, at a glance, looked alright. MLB has done better with their stuff in the past year (probably because of their recent efforts there ...namely, I tend to wonder if Callis is the impetus behind all the positive improvements on their minor league stuff).

 

I had hoped Null would sound more intriguing than the report they have on him ... but it's still plenty solid (and in all honesty, I'd probably place him ahead of a few of the guys they have in front).

When prospects "graduate," I don't think they update the entire list so much as push everyone else up another spot and then add two guys to the list. So when Soler and then Bryant were removed, everyone else moved up a spot, and Null and Lockhart were plugged into the end of the list. But I could be wrong.

Man, our top prospects these last few years have done some mean things to the Southern League. What Javy did as a 20 year old SS was ridiculous, then Bryant topped him last year, and Schwarber is essentially doing the same as him with better K/BB numbers.

i agree, but herrera basically doesn't play. there's no point in calling up alcantara so that he can make one plate appearance per week. if he's called up, he would need to see spot starts at 2b and cf. he's been a lot worse against RHP in his major league career, which doesn't make him an ideal platoon guy with fowler and russell, but i'm not sure if that's just a small sample size thing for mendy.

He'd be used as a super sub, and if his future is with the Cubs, it's probably where he'll be. And that's by no means meant as a knock on him.

He's only 27? Christ, I feel as though it was a lifetime ago when last we had him. I didn't realize until now that he only cracked a top 100 list once at #98 in 2010.

 

For what it's worth, he seems to be doing very well for himself this year.

If he was in the plans as a super sub at the MLB level, wouldn't we be using him similarly in AAA? I mean, Joe says his struggles were confidence related, but that may have been an effect of trying to learn CF, be ready to play third, or just not knowing which spot he'd be at day to day. When was the last time he's played in CF or 3B in Iowa?

Alcantara's Iowa positions by games played:

 

2B - 18

CF - 7

3B - 6

LF - 5

SS - 2

 

There's a couple partial games included there(3 games he had 2 positions), but that seems pretty super-sub-y to me.

In this case, they did a little updating, but only at the very back end. Lockhart was previously #30 on that list. Null was added ahead of him.
