So, disappointing loss, but we'll bounce back.

A 12-2 game tomorrow would be nice. Our offense is good. It's not asking much, Cubs.

acting like not only should they have put the tying run on base (with a pretty good hitter with power coming up next, mind you), but acting like it was such a no brainer that doing otherwise is a travesty lmfao

You mean we shouldn't have walked Gwynn to face Garvey...?

Win the next two and all is good.

Eh, Goldschmidt is arguably the best hitter in baseball. I'd have rather tried to get Tomas and, if Tomas get a hit, Trumbo rather than pitch to Goldschmidt who should be expected to do exactly what he did.

Its time we reevaluated our choice of closer. Rondon sucks [expletive] ass.

Hah I went to sleep when they made it 4-2. Oh well. We need bullpen help.

it sucks that the pen was so good last year and now the same guys that were good are struggling. It's probably just the crapshoot nature of the pen, but I also wonder if they pitched better with lower pressure for a non competitive team.

i'm just frustrated that we were 99% of the way to being 2.5 out

assigning any meaning to this beyond that is something only insane people do

Same here. One of the things about Maddon and this team is I don't think one game affects them the next day. 8-3 their last 11. All 3 of those losses were really frustrating in their own way (mainly the SP were really good and our offense was not/didn't cash in their chances). But we also won some games where we were less than stellar. I just want wins "in the bag" because that's less games we have to win later to win the division or wild card.

Still wondering about pitch selection by Rondon in the 10th; the guy before Goldy got a slider when he should have thrown fastball then Goldy gets a fastball after looking like crap on a slider on the pitch before; those are things that just can't happen.

Probably a little of both.

Last year I wouldn't have batted an eyelash at this, but now it's a frustrating loss.

No. But he should be expected to take a 97mph meatball out of the ballpark off a struggling pitcher.

The odds are still more in favor the next guy, a good hitter, tying it up after you've willfully put the tying run on base, than Goldschmidt tying it up with a HR.

I wouldn't have been opposed to walking Goldschmidt, but going after him isn't a bad idea, either.

I can understand the emotion of it. But anyone who has even the slightest understanding of the probabilities involved knows that unless it is peak Bonds, you don't put the damn tying run on first base.

With 2 outs and a huge gap in quality between the hitter and the next, I'd at least be considering it. I wouldn't have batted an eye if they had walked him, but I'm not pissed they didn't. I really don't respect Tomas at all though.

As someone mentioned before, you could pitch around him, which is kind of looked like they were doing, he chased a ball on 2-1. If he goes down and hits a slider out of the ballpark you tip your cap.

Who [expletive] cares? Let's kick some Diamondback teeth in tonight and move full steam ahead.

Coalesce and embrace the beauty of our awakening.

This part. Tomas has a lofty AVG that's likely being propped up by a .400+ BABIP. He's not that good of a hitter, only has 1 HR to his credit, and the only way they tie the game on a hit is a double. If he singles and the run scores, you still have to get past Trumbo who is not a difficult out. Potentially dangerous? Sure. But he's not Paul Goldschmidt.

He's more likely to hit that double in that spot than Goldschmidt is to hit a home run.

Like people have said, walking Goldschmidt would have been fine, but not walking him is fine as well.

That's actually not quite true. You're comparing the probability of Goldschmidt hitting a home run to Tomas hitting any extra base hit or having an error on an OF.

Goldschmidt is having the year of his life, and he's homering in 6.2% of his PAs after last night.

Tomas is a durdly little turd with a sub-.100 ISO, and he's still getting an XBH in 6.5% of his PAs.

Unless it is peak PED Bonds, walking the tying run is always the wrong play.
