This is... Kinda weird and seems like a bad idea.

Marlins general manager Dan Jennings will transition from the front office to the dugout to replace recently-fired skipper Mike Redmond.

Redmond was let go on Sunday afternoon, just minutes after the Braves finished off a three-game sweep of the Marlins in Miami. Bench coach Rob Leary also got canned, and advance scout Mike Goff is going to move from the front office to the dugout with Jennings to fill that spot. It's all very odd, but we've come to expect odd things from Jeffrey Loria's teams. Jennings has zero managerial experience at the professional level. He did coach baseball at Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama back in the '80s. Mike Berger has been named the Marlins' new general manager, not that it really matters. Loria clearly calls the shots.

I get that this occasionally happens in other sports, but I can't think of any instances in Baseball. Wouldn't one worry a bit about this hampering Jennings' ability to be a GM?

As for hurting Jennings ability to be GM, he's not filling that role anymore. They put someone else in that position.

really? That's the nutty part.

So he's being forced to manage the roster he assembled I guess.

Oh wow, hadn't caught that bit. This just all seems so odd.

Your original post had that bit.

Ah yea jeez I guess my brain didn't process the "transition" bit for some reason.

By going with Jennings, Loria will avoid the expense of adding someone to the payroll. Redmond was under contract through 2017. Loria also is still paying Ozzie Guillen, who had three years left on his deal when he was fired as manager in 2012.

Not sure if that's still the case depending on who does the GM duties. Still funny though.

While I've been interested to see a non-former player get a chance at managing......I didn't want it like this

Why not? There's few teams I'd rather see continue to shoot themselves in the foot than the Marlins.

Well I wanted the experiment to succeed, for one. This will be a disaster and all the old-boys will go "see! non-players have no business in baseball!"

I used to think Loria was one of the great villains in sport (and he is/was), but he's kinda turning into what Francisco Franco was in his later years: just a pitiful, self-deluded fool.

Unfortunately, Generalissimo Jeffrey Loria is still alive.

True, but it sounds like he's run out of guys with less stars on their shoulders to fall on the sword.

I've heard Buster Olney & Co. talk about how many bridges Loria's burned on everything from All Thing Considered on NPR to the Artie Lange podcast today.

I can only hope Manfred realizes what potential this situation has. Everyone hates Loria. He'd have a decade of good graces if he mans up and goes full McCourt.

They just gave him the 2017 all-star game 3 months ago.

My hopes and dreams are he leads them further into the dumpster and gets fired and let go from the organization and then comes out and says "You try winning with this roster!"

That would be too quick. Rather see him get dragged under a bus like OJ in Naked Gun 2.
