Cubs claimed RHP Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Red Sox.

Varvaro had a rough month for the Red Sox, but his sub-3.00 ERA for his career entering the season pretty much assured him of not passing through waivers unclaimed. He'll report to Triple-A Iowa for now but should get a shot with the big club before long.

Joseph Ortiz was DFA'd to make room.

Why Lake to Iowa though? He's been good.

He was taking pretty good at bats, but he still has a .643 OPS w/ 4/0 K/BB in 14 PA

Szczur was similarly productive before he was sent down, and he was only sent down due to a rash of bullpen injuries/overuse. Szczur seems to clearly be ahead in the pecking order and Lake probably only got the call to begin with because Szczur was ineligible to come up on the 27th.

Right'o - just thought Lake had played well enough (he drove a ball to right two nights ago that Heyward made a really good play on to save an extra base hit; made a very nice catch and throw last night) to earn the right to stick around. Not a big deal, just thought he was looking better.
