Scheduled Games (All Times Central):

Iowa at New Orleans, 6:00 p.m.

Tennessee at Mississippi, 12:00 p.m.

Myrtle Beach vs. Salem, 6:05 p.m.

South Bend at Dayton, 6:00 p.m.

Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Yoanner Negrin

Tennessee: RHP Frank Batista

Myrtle Beach: RHP Jen-Ho Tseng

South Bend: RHP Trevor Clifton

I wonder when I'll look at the probables and think to myself, "wow, great pitching day!"

2-for-4 ain't bad in baseball. But, yeah, it's far from great. Great might take a while. And by a while I mean a year or two.

Since Edwards is on an innings watch and thus coming out of the bullpen, about the best pitching day we could hope for in the next few months is:

Pierce Johnson - AAA (assuming his lat strain isn't a big deal)

Rob Zastryzny - AA

Duane Underwood - A+

Jake Stinnett - A

I wouldn't call that a "great" pitching day, but it's pretty interesting. Stinnett could move quickly finishing the year in AA if all goes well. It's possible that sometime next year we could see something like:

Stinnett - AAA

Underwood - AA

Clifton or Sands - A+

Cease - A

Depending on how those guys are developing, that could classify as a great pitching day. Now, if they added Aiken or any college arm in the 1st round of this draft, next year gets even more interesting pitching-wise.

the problem is all the good pitchers that are healthy are on MB

Indeed. Well, most of them. I think Stinnett and Clifton are good prospects that are currently healthy.

It doesn't make for interesting pitching days at every level, but it does make for some nice waves of pitching with depth. Most of those guys (Blackburn, Tseng, Zastryzny, etc.) are likely 4th or 5th starter types, but once Edwards builds up his innings this season, he and Underwood make for strong MOR types or better down the road. It's still very early for Stinnett and Clifton, but they've got decent ceilings as well.

Edwards, Johnson, Zastryzny

Underwood, Tseng, Blackburn, Skulina, Torrez, Stinnett

Sands, Clifton, Steele, Cease, 2015 collegiate draftees

Depth in pitching is especially important. A few of those guys will get injured, a few will fail but a few will be useful big leaguers. I think the pitching depth the Cubs have in their organization had a bit to do with why they brought Hammel back over some others. He was willing to do a two year deal which fits nicely with this group. I think the Cubs can safely expect one or two BOR guys and some bullpen help from this group by 2016 and/or 2017.

And this is the minimum that will happen but anything else would be a bonus. For the next 3-5 years most of our money will be invested in TOR pitching. Let's just hope one of these guys blows us away and becomes a TOR pitcher. My money is on Cease and he will arrive just in time!!

What if Almora is fixed and is everything we dreamed he'd be when he was first mashing everything in sight at KC?

He had like a .640 OPS going into today.

bringing 4 game OPSs at me like i give a [expletive]

all i know is he has walked like a season's worth in a few games and was hitting the ball hard with consistency in what i saw of ST

Almora with an RBI single. Granted this SP is a hot, hot mess, but YAY.

He also has an outfield assist.

Vogelbach is such an anomaly, he has the body of a dongsman but the production of a lead off hitter (minus stolen bases).

It is pretty odd. He sure does have a hell of a hit tool.

I don't think he has the natural loft in his swing. If he tried to add it, he'd lose some of his line-driveyness.

Vogelbach sure isn't going to hit triples, so I'm curious how many of his doubles are wall bangers v. line drives down the line. I mean he's already got a .230 IsoP in these 5 games so as long as there's at least the potential for a few leaving the yard that's fine with me given his typical great plate discipline.

Single was on a 2-0 count.
