Bears have requested interview with Broncos OC Adam Gase for their HC vacancy, league source confirms.

Bears' interview with Gase would have to take place in Denver this week or wait until after Broncos season ends, per NFL rules.

Broncos fans hate Gase

Partly out of ignorance, but I have no reason to believe Gase isn't just along for the ride with Peyton.

There was no cycling happening at the end of his run; their draft picks were failing left and right, so do you honestly think that in a single offseason the presence of Lovie Smith as HC alone would have been enough to suddenly reverse that course and prevent the old defense from collapsing into the cellar?

Lovie Smith doesn't reverse the aging process on Briggs and Peppers. Lovie Smith doesn't prevent Tillman from being injured. Hell, the only thing he possibly changes is them stupidly retaining Urlacher and he was nothing at that point.

Yes. I think a pretty significant part of the reason the defense fell as far as it did was coaching and, given what we've heard about the Lovie guys not buying in, probably motivation to some degree.

The other major reason was a ton of injuries which, who knows. Butterfly effect and such.

I think the 2013 defense would have been better with Lovie, but the offense would have been worse and they would not have won enough.

That's why I said at best they would still been 8-8; having Lovie and Marinelli would have made a big difference from the coaching standpoint, but the talent/health simply wasn't there. This latest season they MAYBE would have been 6-10 or 7-9 instead.

I have to imagine Tice was gone. So how they did in those years would be highly dependent on the OC hire. Based on history I don't imagine it would have been enough, but they may have gotten lucky.

Maybe, but aren't we still looking at mostly the same collection of players on defense? They had a LOT of scrubs out there.

Yea but playing the hypothetical if they could have gotten the OC version of Trestman somewhere maybe the offense looks close to what it was in 13 without the drop off of 14.

Either way I'm happy to have moved on, just sucks two years are down the drain on Trestman.

I'm even more baffled by Mel Tucker; with Trestman I get what they were going for. Trestman had a limited history, but you could see what they were going for. Tucker has almost always sucked. To go from Lovie and Marinelli managing your defense to Tucker is an astonishingly bad downgrade even before they played their first game with Tucker.

I think the absolute dumpster fire our defense has been the past two years makes people hold lovie in a brighter light than maybe they thought when he was here. It wasn't like we were top 10 every single year or anything. The year before peppers I believe we were bottom third (in points allowed at least). The year before that they were 16th. Peppers came in and was an absolute beast who singlehandedly won games for us that first year and took the defense up to near the top. I think the next year the bears were back to middle of the pack.

But before then, I feel like many people wanted lovie gone. 3rd and long conversions by the opposing team were a running joke. I remember discussions for years about how long would it take if we made the switch to a 3-4. I think many people thought the Tampa-2 had lost some effectiveness, especially when you are going up against QB's like Rodgers who are so accurate that bend but don't break doesn't matter because he never turns the ball over (unlike Favre who Lovie did have a lot of success against).

I wanted lovie gone because of his defense 1st special teams 2nd offense last mentality and his inability to win enough. But it's revisionist history to suggest the defense was anything Less than quite good.

2009 the defense (sans Urlacher for 15.5 games) was 21st in Defensive DVOA

2010 4th

2011 4th

2012 1st

Of course it was good; but he was going to run into the same wall.

Yes, but I was responding to the person above who claims we all remember lovie wrong.

I prefer Bowles over Gase but hoping for something else to come up. Gase they could interview during the bye, whereas they'll probably have to wait on Bowles... Neither seems like they type you'd hire before a GM so hopefully that's moving quickly behind the scenes.

Firing lovie was the worst thing ever. They should have John Paxson'd Angelo and le him hire a GM. The Lovie-Cutler combo would have resulted in a SUper Bowl eventually. Lovies teams were great with cutler at QB.

This may be the craziest thing you've ever posted here, and that's saying something.

Lovie's teams won because of the defense. Lovie's focus was on the defense. The defense, however, would not have been immune to the wall of age it ran into if Lovie stuck around. If anything, Lovie got out at the right time because last year probably would have been even worse under him.

They had successfully cycled through top defensive players while not bottoming out in the past. Tommie Harris, agunleye, alex brown, vasher, mike brown etc. lovie was good at getting guys into his system. I have no doubt the defense would have continued to be better than average.

I think Urlacher had a bigger effect then people realize at the end of his career.

Rex Ryan has two interviews for head coaching jobs scheduled for next week, per sources. #nyj

Atlanta and San Francisco, per Twitter.

Bowles and Quinn are the two guys I'm most interested in. I too worry about how good Gase really is with Peyton around.

I'm pretty much fine with them hiring Ryan and I can't tell you why and there are probably a million reasons I shouldnt be.

They will absolutely NOT hire someone with NFL head coaching experience.

Everyone knows his role and reputation as both a leader and how he directed the defense on the field. You run into a point, however, where a player is likely to be off the field more often than not and that their ability to play is rapidly disappearing. If he had been willing to take a cheap 1 year deal where they could have had him around to effectively transition to a new defense, fine, but the reports were that he wasn't willing to take a short or cheap deal and as such it was just time to end things. Given that he didn't end up anywhere else speaks pretty loudly to both his unwillingness to back down on cost and/or his health.

@ESPNChiBears: NFL's Career Development Advisory Panel providing teams w/about 7 GM candidates, includes: Morocco Brown, Eric Schaffer, Eric DeCosta (cont)

@ESPNChiBears: (Cont)...Mike Maccagnan and Chris Ballard. All good names to monitor. #Bears

Based on my 30 second research, Shaffer has to be the oddest name on that list. He's basically Cliff Stein (and I don't think as good at it)

And Maccagnan was a CFL executive before being an NFL scout for 10 years and only recently becoming college scouting director. So he's like Ballard mixed with Trestman.

Again, 30 second research, hot takes here.

Brown just another former Bear, Angelo era hire.
