Help me out people with amazing executive search experience, why would you hire a guy like Accorsi?

In the real world you don't know all the candidates for such a job. There aren't dozens of websites ranking these dudes and talking about their achievements. So you hire consultants to provide you with that list, likely to make initial contact with those candidates to gauge interest and in some cases due a little background digging to make sure there is no funny business reason why you should ignore an otherwise qualified candidate.

In football I do not see why it is necessary, but if you are George it is probably prudent to do so.

So, The Boys aren't trusted to their own judgement by Mama? Or by The Board?

That's the thing - I am not sure I'd feel better about it if George were doing this without a learned consultant. I understand why people might view it as the Bears being incompetent, but I tend to see it as an acknowledgment by George of his limitations, the importance of making a good hire, and commitment to expend financial resources in a thoughtful and intelligent manner.

EDIT: They certainly are not the first professional sports franchise to take this approach, BTW.

The company line is that George has a better understanding of the football world now than when he took over (he was in charge of tickets before becoming Chairmen) and that understanding made him realize he doesn't know enough. So he chose this. He is the Chairmen of the Board, so, presumably he made this decision.

the fact that we're interviewing HC candidates without having a GM is really [expletive] up and pisses me off

Some guys can only be interviewed now or you have to wait for weeks. It is perfectly reasonable that they would interview these guys to get the process started so that once a GM is hired they will only have to let him interview these guys again. It's a lot better than not showing any interest in them and allowing potential candidates to be ignored.

This. You're being completely unrealistic if you think its prudent to wait to interview HC's until after a GM is in place. You need to at least get in front of the HC candidates and get a sense of who they are / give them a sense of who you are.

Gary Kubiak would be same old Bears. Texans fans hated him and his team won 7 more games without him this season.

Um, doesn't that kinda ignore the 2 years previous when they won 22 games?

On the other hand, in one year he made a dramatic turnaround with the Flacco led Balt offense. It can go both ways.

It's not like other teams are gonna wait to hire the best HC's until we get our GM in place. No harm in making contact.

That's fine but I don't think some candidate is going wait around with an offer in the hand so whether we make contact now or not- urgency in the GM hiring is important.

Hopefully they just have a very short GM list and are moving quickly and quietly behind the scenes.

They can do two things at once. Find a GM, while vetting HC candidates.

Decosta and Kubiak would be a really nice way to come out of all of this.

I also want Dennison as OC and some other person from the Balt defensive tree then but I think Balt might start cutting us off haha (and they'd be able to with Dennison)

No [expletive], that's what I said I hope they are doing, but right now the reports are pretty favored in the one direction.

Hopefully Baltimore will let us interview Decosta this time.

I don't think Balt has stopped DeCosta ever. DeCosta has always stopped himself.

Eric DeCosta (assistant general manager, Baltimore Ravens): For the past three seasons, DeCosta has served as Ozzie Newsome’s No. 2 in the chain of command, overseeing both the college scouting and pro personnel departments — two departments he’s previously directed. DeCosta has spent all 18 of his NFL seasons with the Ravens, who have won two Super Bowl championships over that span. The Ravens have developed a model that produces a steady stream of homegrown talent via the draft. Back in 2012, the Bears requested permission to interview DeCosta for their general manager opening , but they were denied.

either durkin worded that strangely or is just wrong. looks like you're right.

I think he worded it funny. I thought HC and GM(with caveat they are the final decision maker) were the two protected promotions teams couldn't deny.

The simple fact that he was a head coach before (and is an offensive minded coach) pretty much negates any concept of him being "same old Bears".

Um, I disagree. There's been more GM candidates mentioned in connection with the Bears thus far.

Yeah, they are moving on both fronts. I'd bet we will have a GM by Friday or Saturday and a coach a week or two later.

I'm guess we don't see a coach until the pro bowl week.

None of those lists are confirmed lists from my understanding, but just lists given to the Bears (or anyone) by advisory panels.

In the scope of this morning until now I think we got our first confirmed interest on the GM front compared to I think 4 HC confirmations.

i'd be pretty shocked if we already had a GM by this weekend too
