So I've spent all my Bears energy on draft and free agency. Looking ahead it seems there's a projected cap of 140 with the Bears committed at 105 with very little room to free up additional space. However 2016 will grant a lot more cap flexibility and probably another 10M in cap space.

Our draft pool shouldn't be more than 5-5.5, mainly dependent on where we fall (I'm guessing 10th pick at worst). No one too notable is a FA with the most interesting names being Paea, DLP, Tillmam, and Conte. Should be around 20M to spend in new FA, and I'll assume about 5M buffer, so 15M. I think you have two choices, which is

1. Make one big splash on the front 4 with Suh. He'll take up most of your space, and you'll have to address your DB heavily in the top three rounds of the draft.

2. Split your FA allocation and try and cover both a starting S and Nickel/CB. It's a pretty decent looking DB pool and while you may not get the top at each position, you can probably allocate about 11M with some backloading if necessary and get two legit starters to upgrade and solidify the DB. With some leftover for other small upgrades- (maybe a slot WR or second TE, or DE help). Then you're really free to go BPA in the draft, with a focus on D (personally really liking the idea of Thompson or McKinney in the first- both would give us a nice speed boost at LB)

Plan two though kind of hedges on our current young defensive players and seeing what we have the rest of the way). No reason not to get Ferguson, Sutton, Washington, Jones, and Bostic (once healthy) plenty of burn the rest of the way. While none are likely to be defensive fixtures if we see enough to establish them as rotational pieces/ starters it makes the outlook a lot better.

If we stick with the 4-3, I want Suh. Even if we move to a 3-4, I still probably want him, though idk about how he would adjust. I don't care if he turns out to actually be a lunatic, the dude is an absolute monster at DT and the kind of pass rush and disruption he offers can make up for a lot of ills in the secondary.

I wouldn't go after a splash unless Suh or similar just fall into our laps, kinda like Allen did. I'd rather go after a few pieces. I could see free agents at RT, S, DT, CB, or LB. A couple of those could be starters and the others quality depth.

To put some names to it, Id basically go after Seattle guys.

KJ Wright might be somewhat of a splash signing, but low key. I also like Walter Thurmond III despite him being out for the year for the Giants. And Jeron Johnson is backup SS who I liked in the draft and Seattle has kept around as a strong backup and special teamer.

Then draft Shaq in the 1st and the best DB or OT in the next couple of rounds.

How big a cap hit is it to part with Jared Allen this offseason?

According to Overthecap it's all guaranteed so we're paying him 12.5 no matter what. Next year we walk away from it all. Not sure if pre/post June 1 changes any of that though or if it's even right.

Damn. Guess we're stuck with him for one more year.

There's nothing too surprising to close observers of this disastrous Bears team, but it's interesting when national media starts to pay attention.

The Bears are in a state of crisis, according to several sources with knowledge of the locker room, with a leadership void further fueling their downward spiral. Players are tuning coach Marc Trestman out, according to numerous sources, there has been increased in-fighting in recent weeks and the team's dedication has been called in to question at times by players and coaches alike, sources said.

Numerous sources pointed to lack of leadership and accountability as key factors in the team's awful first half after expectations of a possible Super Bowl, and if anything the situation has gotten worse in recent weeks. After a humiliating defeat at New England last week, in which the Bears trailed 38-7 at halftime, several member of the organization feared for Trestman's job, sources said, and later in the week ownership ended up putting out a vote of confidence for Tretsman and general manager Phil Emery. The GM chose Trestman over Bruce Arians, who has become a perennial Coach of the Year candidate in Arizona.

The construction of the team has also come under criticism, particularly after signing embattled quarterback Jay Cutler to an $18 million-a-season extension after last season, and Cutler's ability to lead and galvanize a team has continued to come under question inside the Bears locker room. Longtime leaders like Brian Urlacher are gone, and veterans like Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman have been hurt almost all season, mitigating their ability to assuage the situation.

Trestman, a bright offensive mind who was hired away from Montreal of the Canadian Football League, has resonated with players more like a coordinator than a head coach, sources said, and that dynamic coupled with the issues in the locker room has created a toxic environment. At 3-5 the Bears face an uphill climb to reach the playoffs and tensions could remain high there for the duration of the season.

There remains a lack of top personnel on the defensive side of the football, with many of the team's assets sunk into a spiraling offense that has suffered from infighting. Chicago is on its bye this week and play at the Packers in Week 10.

SF struggling against the Rams at home, and the Bears don't have a decent win all season. Bears are 20th in points. 21st if SF scores 13 more.

Ha, Hub is on the radio right now basically calling LaCanfora a hack that isn't very well respected by his peers.

Brad Biggs was on right after La Confora this morning and was very subtly saying the same thing.

I was distracted during Biggs, so I missed that. My guess is that Mulligan probably missed it too. He seemed almost excited about the report.
