It seems like most of the time any team is known as the "prohibitive favorite", they miss out. Not that I think we're very serious honestly. But I won't be surprised if he goes somewhere other than San Diego.

Weren't we the favorites for Lester for months?

I won't be pissed if they sign Shields for 3 years, but I don't particularly want him either.

We are the favorites based on media speculation. Once the bidding started it seemed like the Giants and Red Sox were mentioned more often as favorites than we were. Even at the start of the winter meetings when we were mentioned among the finalists with those teams I think the consensus was he was going elsewhere.

It couldn't be because the Cubs FO seems to keep things close to the vest though.

To me this seems like a clear case of Shields agents trying to get some more bidding going from SD but crazier things have happened.

I'm in the same boat where I won't at all be upset if we get him but definitely won't be very upset if we don't.

That was never really the case except in pessimistic Cubs fans minds. Just about everyone expected him with the Cubs.

There was plenty of talk of him heading back to the Sox among national writers. I certainly remember it looking like the more likely outcome for a hot minute there.

That's sort of encouraging. I think what really has me excited about bringing him in is the notion that other dominos will have to fall on the roster. Should be fun.

@JimBowden_ESPN: I am expecting Shields deal to reach the finish the line in the 4-year 72-80 million dollar range. #Padres

We should have just given him 4/80 3 weeks ago.

3 weeks ago he might not have settled for it

if it's really looking to be in the 4-72/80M range i'll be a tad upset if we don't outbid that.

we might and he still might not take it unless we outbid it by a lot

the padres look pretty solid and, you know, san diego and all that. especially since he's from there.

Shields is weird in that his velocity has ticked up nearly every year he's been in the majors. I'm not sure I've ever seen that with another pitcher.

If Shields is the kind of player who is content to collect a paycheck on a crappy team because that team happens to play in his hometown in sunny Southern California, perhaps he's not the player the Cubs need? I get that he's better than the collection of humps currently competing for rotation spots, but shouldn't we want someone who values winning over weather?

Does San Diego get a single completely healthy season between Cashner, Josh Johnson, Brandon Morrow and Robbie Erlin?

I guess that's why they want Shields so badly.

On the other hand, add a couple of those guys being healthy to Shields and Ross/Kennedy and you have one heck of a rotation.

Why do people keep pretending the Padres are supposed to be a crappy team on here?

Because they've had two winning seasons in the past 8 years and play in a park no one can hit in?

The point is, adding Shields to the Cubs is more impactful, IMO, than adding him to the Padres

Well, [expletive], that's the last time I defend Derwood.

When was the first time?

And I admitted from the start that I was hot taking this....why would I go only half way with it?

The Cubs have been dog [expletive] the past 3-4 seasons... are they a crappy team this year?

The Padres underwent one of the biggest transformations this offseason. You could argue they have a better lineup than the Dodgers at this point.

*Sigh*

That's part of the joke.

Basic human decency?
