The Bears were in nickel 62% of the time Sunday (judging by the percentage of plays Fuller was in versus McClellin).

Felt like they were in nickel more than that.

is that a buffalo?

Lost a bet maybe?

EDIT: Nope.

He even acknowledged his unfortunate attire choice Monday — a gray T-shirt that featured, of all things, a starred and striped Buffalo, eerily similar to the Bills logo.

"You caught me," Cutler said. "Of course I didn't notice (this). Otherwise I wouldn't have worn it."

Probably a little heavy on the nickel considering it was a predominant running team they were playing. But generally, you want your best 11 out there. I'd really like to see a lot more substitution on defense. I don't remember much of Houston inside in the nickel.

Young only had 21 of 57 snaps. DJ only 22, while Briggs had all of them. I remember Shea on 1 nickel snap (had 1 more snap than DJ) and he blitzed unsurprisingly. Sutton and Ferguson only combined for 23 snaps. I thought Sutton and Young were extremely effective. I'd like to see a lot more of them and more rotation with the LBs and FS (McCray only played 11 snaps, Mundy played all).

According to this, McClellin was in on two nickel plays and Allen was in on all but four plays the whole game: http://thegamechicago.com/2014/09/09/week-1-rewind-bears-run-defense-looks-improved-even-though-results-were-the-same/#axzz3Cpqxn3qc

Definitely would like to see more of Young for Allen. Allen might need more rest to be effective.

Link also shows just how bad Briggs was on Anthony Dixon's big run in the zone read. Can't tell if he's freelancing or just clueless in the zone read but he's looked bad against it going back to Kaepernick and Wilson in 2012.

@BradBiggs: After #Bears coaches' review of film, S Ryan Mundy credited with team-high 10 tackles. DE Willie Young with 7 in only 21 snaps.

@BradBiggs: Charles Tillman 9 tackles, Jon Bostic 8, Shea McClellin 7, Jeremiah Ratliff 6, Chris Conte, Kyle Fuller, Lance Briggs all with 5.

@AdamHoge

Per Lance Briggs on his TV show, Ryan Mundy missed a check on the Fred Jackson OT run and was supposed to be in the gap Jackson ran through.

Seems like Briggs is a shitty caller (I'm assuming he's the one who calls the play on the field). Didn't the same thing happen with Conte in the GB game where he missed the man to man and played zone? Seems like there are a lot of miscommunication on the defensive side the past 2 years.

That seems pretty accurate based on what it looked like to me. Briggs hit the front side gap, forced a cut back, but got knocked down when he could have slid down the line and made a play. So that leaves Bostic and Mundy. Bostic was actually in a gap (got blocked). Mundy was just kinda there.

I kinda hope that Briggs is right, and just not covering his ass. Cuz at least Mundy has the excuse of being new, and should have room for improvement as the season progresses. Briggs has no excuse if it was his screw up.

That's pretty crappy of Briggs to say publicly, assuming it is true.

Briggs has always been one of the worst people on the Bears. He's typically been a bad person, teammate, and an A-hole. Funny how much more tolerable it was when he was a good player.

It depends. Reading in text it sounds bad, but I didn't see the TV show so I don't know the context. For all we know he could have been breaking down the play on film on TV and showing who should be where. He could have also assigned some fault on the play to himself and that quote wasn't included in the tweet.

The bold is exactly what he was doing.

Briggs did blame himself for the big first half run (which was blatantly his fault).

But yes, there was miscommunication on the Conte/GB play and Briggs makes the calls.

May be time to get Williams and Bostic with the green dots. Maybe taking that responsibility from Briggs allows him to stop thinking so much on the field and just playing football.
