Why not? Having Cespedes wouldn't be blocking anyone, and even a slightly above average OF would have been preferable to the raging tire fire throughout the OF. I know the FO has had a bizarrely lucky streak of missing out on FA's that have been busts, but it's not like it's a "phew, really dodged a bullet there" with all of their misses.

No one is saying that. Just that it's not a guy you stay up at night thinking "man, what could have been...".

I would have like the Cubs to have signed him, but by this time next year (in a hypothetical world where we signed him) he very well could be blocking someone. Not everyone agrees, but I think Bryant ends up in the OF. Soler is coming, and all signs point to Alcantara being the CF. Of course next season is that last on his contract and he could be moved, and having him the the last few years would have been nice, but I'm less and less bothered by missing out on him every day.

Cespedes would've easily fit into this year's outfield, and by rate he would've been about the 5th best outfielder they employed last year. The consistency matters, but it also illustrates that locking in league average production for 9 milllion per year without long term control is not worth the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments that he's received because he happened to be an IFA.

The gnashing of teeth and rending of garments is in response to all the 90 loss seasons.

Cespedes is just another brick in the wall, but that doesn't mean fans who actually care about results of the major league team are not allowed to wish they signed him. Or does it?

Or having Cespedes gives you more freedom to move guys in trades. Or he himself could have been a tradeable asset. The Cubs avoided nothing bad by not signing him.

I'm saying Mr. Sofa's bizarre obsession with Cespedes specifically isn't based on anything rational. In hindsight I'd rather they signed Cespedes instead of DeJesus+Schierholtz, but it's about #528 on the list of regrets which is why I don't repeatedly rue the day that he got away.

It's humorous hyperbole based on an "obsession" with the Cubs failing to sign really any valuable longterm everyday FA under the current FO. I wasn't even the one who brought him up.

Hopefully Soler soon puts an end to that obsession.

Has anyone said that they did? If so, I missed it.

My boy Sammy Sofa wanted Cespedes the whole time, so I have to give him that. But he also wanted Pujols at $30 million, so in the end I'm OK with him not getting either of his wishes and they cancel each other out. To me, at least.

I've stupidly wanted every big name FA that's come up since Theo and co. were hired and that's likely never going to change barring all of the prospects coming up and being amazing. This rebuild has broken what little baseball acumen I had and now I am meatballin' hard.

he's always telling jorge not to do it between 4 and 5 because that's theo's time but then jorge just does it anyway

Waiting for it to get to a game thread.

I was also very much in favor of signing Pujols. I think that is an underrated aspect of the rebuild, not signing contracts that would significantly inhibit the club's chances of winning in the future. Sure, some of it is due to #PTR, but the Pujols/Fielder thing is a perfect example. The Cubs had a hole at 1B with no legitimate prospects at 1B anywhere in the system. It seemed to make all the sense in the world to sign one of the two star FA 1B. But instead of doing that they traded for a young 1B who is now one of the more valuable commodities in baseball (due to the combo of his production and team-friendly contract).

Headley was another one who a lot of people wanted, and were willing to give up a lot when he was coming off his big year. Turns out that one was well avoided, too.

There have been some misses for sure - Darvish and Puig being two of the more glaring ones - but they're basically set up with zero bad contract, a lot of money to spend, and the best farm system in the game within a year of making a major impact at the big league level. Prospects can/do fail, and maybe that will happen, but there aren't many organisations you'd trade places with if you're talking about wins in the next 10 years.

And to clarify, my desire of these huge signings would be predicated on being indicative of the Cubs actually being able to act like the grown-ass ballin' big market team they should be. I only want them spending big once they can actually eat said spending when necessary a la the Dodgers or the Angels.

Pujols had me really conflicted. Everything in the the way his numbers were trending said stay the [expletive] away, and iirc, I argued pretty hard against those who wanted him signed at all costs. But on the other hand, I really wanted to feel the pain of Cardinal fans as their franchise cornerstone spurned them for their hated rivals.

It would have been a complete disaster; he was already a couple years into his decline phase, and that has continued. And you know the pain of the BFIB would have turned into mocking us about being saddled with that outrageous contract.
