Mets fan here. I figured you guys would want to see some Mets fans perspectives on a potential trade between the Mets and Cubs. It seems like they're perfect trade partners. Both in bad shape right now, but both have something to look forward to in the future (the Cubs with all their hitting prospects, Mets with the young pitchers). Thought it would be interesting to see some Cubs fans viewpoints if they eventually start discussing a deal, which they probably will at some point.

Thanks for stopping by, but we don't want your pitchers. We're just fine stockpiling position players, we still need tons of them.

Feel free to call back in 18 months or so when that might change.

I love the internet so much.

Thread talking about Cubs' prospects, OK. I don't want to read all nine pages, let's go straight to the last and read the first post there:

Your whole argument is based on your belief that Scandinavians use only patronymics in naming convention. They got rid of that more than a century ago.

Prior to about 1850 all of the Scandinavian countries used a form of patronymics. The given name of a father was used as a surname for each of the children. The son's used the father's given name and a suffix that meant "son" and the daughter's used the father's given name and a suffix meaning "daughter".

I realize that Castro makes sense for the Mets and their young pitching prospects make sense for the Cubs, but what you guys probably aren't reading (because you're out of market) are the sound bites from our front office that say things like how much they value Castro, how excited they are with his progression, how he doesn't have to worry about anyone moving him off the position, how he, Russell, and Baez can all fit into the infield, etc. Not to mention they've made it known they plan to explore the FA pitcher market. They've also given off vibes that they feel young pitching prospects are too volatile to sink too much investment into (injuries, poor performance, etc), and that buying experienced pitching is the smarter way of acquiring it. Instead of investing in pitching prospects they invest in position prospects, and they use those to acquire major league talent, if they trade them, because the landscape of baseball is that offense is a very scarce commodity these days.

By all accounts from what our front office has said, it sounds like they are content going into 2015 keeping all of our shortstops. A lot of the confusion people have is that the Cubs can't possible have three shortstops on the roster (four if you count Alcantara). Well reality is Baez probably makes more sense as a third baseman (cannon arm), Russell makes more sense as a SS (best defensive profile of the three), and Castro makes more sense as a 2B (great range, not so great arm), and Alcantara is being groomed for center field.

Basically the Cubs don't need to move any of them, because they are all athletic enough to change positions and succeed. Now, that said it's very possible they use their strength to address a weakness but all signs point to them keeping Castro. We've been speculating (me a lot more than others, admittedly) that one of Russell or Baez could be moved for a major piece, but it's not pitching, it's Giancarlo Stanton (not as crazy as it sounds if you really look into the situation [also that sounds a lot like the Digiorno tagline]). Soooooo unless you got something better than Stanton chances are you won't be getting any of our shortstops.

Thanks, but no thanks. We'll keep our hitters and sign some pitchers.

Pretty rational takes. I wouldn't trade Castro for Syndergaard, but I would send Russell straight up.

Ok, just saw his stats this year. They might need to give us more.

Thanks for stopping in and it does certainly SEEM like we're tailor-made trade partners. But for the very detailed reasons above that Logan listed, I find it doubtful we'll find a trade. Our FO can be convinced to trade anything at a price obviously.....But Alderson isn't dumb and our FO obviously doesn't value young pitching all that highly. I just don't see a match. Not just with you guys(who probably are set up better than anyone else to make a pitching for hitting swap) but with anyone.

If they want Castro, I want Harvey (injured) and Wheeler (somewhat inconsistent).

The Mets are getting a 24 year old, three time all-star SS who is signed to a very team-friendly contract. I'm really not sure I'm getting enough.

In the 1.5 seconds it took me to see Snydergaard randomly turned pretty awful this year, I see i'm late to the party on Aiken already being broken before he signed.

By their logic, if their pitching prospects are so great, they should be happy to trade us Harvey and Wheeler because they're so easily replaced by all their great prospects they want to pawn off on us instead.

In Syndergaard's defense, he's pitching in the PCL, he's 21, and he is K'ing guys. I'd love to have that guy. But I'd rather draft him in the 40ish range, as Toronto did with him.(38th)

i keep telling myself the only type of pitching prospect i'd ever devote big resources to (be it a top 2-3 draft pick or a trade) is like 2001 Mark Prior and then I remember what happened to even him ugh

I want a TOR guy. But I'm coming around on the hitters4eva movement. Just sign them in FA or develop one, within the large group of upside arms we continually draft/sign as IFA's. Our infrastructure that has been built really is starting to show results, in this aspect of things.
