I guess I missed the joke on JD's call on the 2nd HR. What's this disrespected and day off stuff?

I just thought the disrespected thing was funny and Rizzo didn't play yesterday.

so, Jason Hammel...

If another team isn't willing to give us something really nice for him, I wouldn't mind giving him a 2-3 year extension.

Yes. I understand that Shark staying may be a lost cause so we have to move him, but do we have to move Hammel?

If, and it's a big if, we both don't trade Hammel and he performs well for most of the year, instead of giving him two or three years at $8-10 million per or whatever, would it be better to just give him the qualifier and pay him 14 for one?

My biggest concern with him is that he's only averaged 6 IP/start once in his career.

And I'd much rather give him 2/$8-10 per than a QO. I don't think he'd get signed until after the deadline if they did that if he turned it down and it's a pretty unnecessary overpay if he doesn't.

Giving Hammel the QO doesn't really solve any problems. The front office has shown a talent for getting good performances on one year deals for guys who make half the QO, so keeping Hammel for just the one additional year at 14 million is chasing last year's numbers. Extending him would be preferable to the QO, both are worse than the more likely option of trading him and then adding next year's Hammel for a lot less if they have a need in the rotation. By trading this year's Hammel each time, next year's roster is slated to have Arrieta in the rotation plus Strop and Vizcaino in the pen. Adding the haul for Hammel(likely to be the best of the 3 at this rate), plus maybe next year's Hammel if needed is the best course of action.

Yes, 100 percent agreed. I would very much enjoy seeing him traded and hope it's the actual outcome.

All good points on the QO. I just don't really want to have him for multiple years when our front office up until now has done a great job of getting Hammel types for one year and cheap.

Too many unknowns right now for me to have a real solid opinion. Depends a ton on who is in the mix for the return (which I have little doubt they'll get good value) but even moreso on who's available on his type of deal this offseason. I'd be fine with giving him 2 more years at a similar rate to what he's getting this year if the other options for next year aren't appealing.

The only problem is that if he DOES actually pitch well the rest of the year, there is no way he's only going to get a one or two year deal at $6 per. At least I wouldn't think so.
