MIN/COL going to game 7. Avs pulled the goalie with nearly 3 minutes left w/ only 1 goal lead.

Not sure but I don't remember seeing that before. Wild burned them twice with the empty net.

Roy's been pulling the goalie early all year, apparently. Colorado's won two games in this series in OT after tying the game on empty-net rallies, so it's working.

There's a great paper that was written a few years back which investigated this question... and concluded that Roy and the aggressive early pull is the right one. Similar to NFL coaches and going for it on 4th down, NHL coaches are too conservative with pulling the goalie.

I think that decision is made too much on match ups for any study to be particularly useful. Pulling the goalie might work better against a team with less experience like the Wild as opposed to a team like the Bruins. The numbers are likely skewed by coaches taking into account who they're playing as well as the level of desparation.

In a regular season game between Columbus and Dallas, Dallas pulled the goalie with 12:00 left while on a power play. The 6-on-4 worked and Dallas tied the game

I have often wondered if coaches pulled their goalie on PPs, would the numbers work out in the long run.

with icing not being a concern on the kill I would think that would be tough

Three Game 7s tonight. Like Christmas morning.

I think if the Kings score first they beat the Sha arks.

I'd like to see the Wild beat the Avs. There ought to be at least 1 upset in round 1.

I don't really care about Flyers/ Rangers. Flyers / Pens is usually fun.

It's probably an east coast bias thing, but I can't believe no one is talking about the Kings being one win away from overcoming a 3-0 deficit and winning the series. It's only happened like 5 times in professional sports history. When the Flyers did it to the Bruins a few years back, it was big news but for some reason its a blip on the radar even in hockey circles.

East Coast bias.

Tonight I think the Sharks get it done again. They nearly blew a 3-0 lead to Detroit in 2011 only to win game 7. I think they will find a way again.

Wild and Rangers also win game 7's tonight

Weren't the Blackhawks technically an upset?

Assuming you are basing this solely on seeds instead of expectations. The BHawks were betting favorites, were they not?

I think the Blues were actually slight betting favorites, but the Blackhawks were the second most favored team in the West to win the Cup (after the Blues)

I guess I'm rooting for the Wild tonight although after watching the Avs, I don't think the reality matches a lot of the hype I've been hearing

I just flipped on the Avs-Wild game and it seems a lot more wide open than the Blues-Hawks games. Is that entirely due to the Blues slow down game with their lack of offense?

Sharks controlled the second period and managed to get out scored 2-1.

Pulling for the Wild. The Avs have more luck vs the Hawks.

They've been battling uphill all night. Looking like Hawks/Avs
