There's no reason we can't compete next year...we're competing fine this year.

Playing competitively in individual games and competing for a World Series title aren't quite the same thing.

Really?? Tell me more.

Just because they aren't being blown out of games doesn't mean they are going to be contenders for a division or world series title. Sure they have been in most of the games so far, but we are only 9 games into the season. I guess it depends on your definition of competing. I think the Cubs can potentially field a respectable team next year, but not a team that will compete for a championship quite yet.

We can compete for a wild card next year...and once you're in the playoffs, well, you know...

Obviously we have a small sample size this year...but I like the core of Rizzo-Castro-Baez-Bryant-Olt-Castillo-Shark-Wood-Jackson enough to think a Wild Card is well within reach.

I am still thinking the timetable is maybe a year later than that, possible Wild Card in 2016, at which time Samardzija would be 31. That is a young 31 though in terms of number of innings pitched, so it is entirely possible that he could still have multiple very good seasons into his mid 30's. I won't be upset at all if the Cubs sign him to a long term deal, but I would certainly understand if they were to deal him for one or more top prospects. The one thing they really can't afford to do is go into next season with him still on the roster and no long term deal in place.

Wasn't veras our biggest acquisition this offseason?

I'm pretty convinced that didn't hit him. Also, [expletive] the roles. Rendon is our best reliever right now; put him in.
