I don't want it to seem like I am defending the previous coaching staff, because they were horrible. But it seems like whatever improvements we've seen on offense due to the change in coaching staff has been offset by the defense getting worse.

Okay, so why are you harping on the Trestman's offense?

Because it hasn't been a huge upgrade which I thought was the point in bringing in an offensive minded head coach. We won 10 games last year with the defense being the driving force. Now we throw all the focus on offense but we aren't going to improve on last season, it appears. I realize there is a long way to go but do you think we're going to win 10+ games with this team?

God forbid I say something negative about Saint Jay, but he's still making the same mistakes. Way too much throwing off the wrong foot and forcing passes into double & triple coverages.

So you expect a "huge" improvement on 10 wins in one season or else it is a failure?

It's been 5 games. If you had reasonable expectations coming in, I do not think you could have expected the offense to do anything more than it has done through 5 games.

The decision to hire an offensive minded head coach was not based solely no the desire to have the 2013 team win more games than the 2012 team. The decision was to maximize their ability to succeed on a regular basis.

Wait, what? You were whining about the offense. Now you're changing to the defense? Decide what point you want to make.

And isn't the point to win more games?

No kidding; the Bears were plowing headlong in the wrong direction for so long, and someone expects them to reverse course and the offense to be stomping on throats 5 games into the season?

Let me clarify. I expected the defense to take step backward with the coaching change. I was hoping it would be a small one that would easily be covered up by the marked improvement in the offense.

Well everyone was hoping that, but age and injuries have caught up to them. It's been a long time coming, and there was no way to build defensive depth and fix the offensive line in the same offseason. They correctly focused on the offensive side of the ball, as it's an offensive league and they have an offensive coach.

At this point, our best hope is that the offense shows large improvements over the course of the rest of the season and can win in shootouts.

Immediately? That's your fault then.

5 games is immediately?

Absolutely! This is Jay's what...4th or 5th OC/system? This offense is going to improve over the course of years. If you're expecting massive improvement game to game, you're going to be disappointed.

Yes. Anybody looking at the situation had to know it would take a while for the offense to hit its stride. You can't expect a new system to be introduced, along with significant changes in personnel, and the team to be running it to full effect the first five weeks of the season.

It is your fault for not having reasonable expectations if you expected the offense to be significantly better than it has been through 5 weeks.

Who said anything about "full effect"?

Ok, we've reached the point of this argument where it's going to devolve into nitpicking the intricacies of wording. The point is that the offense is improving, the defense is getting worse, and none of this is unexpected. If you expected different, you were wrong.

Heading into yesterday, the Bears offense had an Aikman eff. rating that was tied for 13th in the NFL on offense, last year it was 28th.

After 5 games it should be #1!!!!

So we're barely above average and that's supposed to be exciting to me?

Coming from being 28th out of 32 teams, and only 5 games into a new system, yes, that should be very exciting to you. It will continue to go up over time.

I don't care about your level of excitement. But you should be realistic.

Yesterday they averaged more yards per play in a game since a game vs. the Lions in September of 1989. I would say that's progress.

Again, decide what point you want to argue. We aren't talking about wins and losses. We're talking about the offense you found worthy to mock.

I really love this amazing high powered offense the CFL guy has brought to the Bears. He's a [expletive] wizard, I tell you.
