Since no one has talked about it

Scott Baker (elbow) threw five scoreless innings in his rehab debut Wednesday with Low-A Kane County.

Baker retired the first 13 batters he faced and yielded just one hit in all. The right-hander is still making his way back from Tommy John surgery and still hoping to join the Cubs' rotation at some point this season.

I hope they can re-sign him to a reasonable deal next year after paying him 5.5 million to rehab.

after taking 5.5M and giving us zilch, he should pitch next year for free as a token of good faith.

Honestly, I don't want him back. Shark/Wood/E-Jax with one of Arrieta/Rusin/Grimm/Hendricks/Villanueva/Cabrera and hopefully Tanaka(doubtful) or Sung Min Yoon or Josh Johnson. Maybe Phil Hughes. At any rate, with the depth we have, the one FA SP we sign needs to be better than Baker.

When did we get Ramirez? I'll check "Transactions." Also, about Baker, if he can pitch and he comes cheap, why not? Arrietta has not shown me that he can be consistent despite his great stuff.

He finalized the Garza deal.

Baker's ceiling isn't all that high and his rehab has been so...not smooth, that it's hard for me to get to a realistic scenario where he even cracks the Top 7 in rotation options for next year. So if they pay him the minimum or give him an MiLB deal? Sure, go for it. But he's of little consequence when it comes to building next year's roster.

Even in this, which was easily his best rehab start, Baker struck out one A-ball hitter in five innings. Let's just move on.

I don't know how good his stuff was pre-injury but I've been unimpressed with the reports I've seen of his rehab starts.

I want him to sell tickets or something like that next year to pay the team back for the 5.5M he stole.

Come on. I imagine the Cubs recouped most of his salary in insurance. Besides that he didn't steal anything.

What makes you think they were able to insure most of a $5.5m contract for a guy going through rehab? What idiotic insurance company would underwrite that?

regardless, the cubs knew his condition when they signed him. You can't say he stole anything unless he half-assed his rehab.

I don't think the guy really thinks Baker jimmied into Ricketts' lockbox.

late to the party (been away all weekend), but no i dont really think that. I was just being sarcastic, half-bitter. I don't want him selling tickets. Also don't want him anywhere near this team next year unless its taking his start every 5th day in Des Moines.
