How long do flukes last? Especially fluke home run streaks by a guy that has shown barely any power in his entire career.

I'm not suggesting he will ever be apart of the next Cubs contender, but what he is doing is pretty absurd.

it's not absurd, it's 50 at-bats. flukes in baseball last a lot longer than that.

In 2010 with the Marlins, he put up a line of .318./348/.705/1.052 in 47 PA. This year he has a line of .318/.388/.795/1.183 in 49 PA. In between that he's been a -2 WAR player in ~600 PA.

The only thing I know or care to know about Donnie Murphy is that every time I check the box hoping it was Rizzo or Castro who accounted for our only run, I have to instead see that it was flipping Donnie Murphy.

Yes, a thousand times, yes.

Yes!! I knew I wasn't the only one. See the Cubs score 11 runs and it's [expletive] Murphy and Schierholtz (which is ok) doing everything while Rizzo and Castro go 0-9

To be fair to Rizzo (I mean, he's still sucking, but let's be nice), I'm pretty sure he didn't start that game.

Castillo also didnt start, just to make it extra annoying.

As I mentioned last week, he had averaged about 18 homers per full season of ABs, so it's not like he ever lacked power for his positions. Of course, now he's hitting three homers a week, which is stupid from anywhere/anywhen

Mr Murphy probably will turn into Murphy's law for the Cubs....However there are some precedents that could give cub fans false hope. The realistic precedents that come to mind are Jamey Carroll and Scott Brosius. While they are not former all stars they both had value. You could safely say Murphy could fit into that group pre breakout. The top tier would be Luis Gonzalez and Jose Bautista which happen like once or twice a decade.

Will it happen? Doubt it but crazier things have happened.

Like Rick Wilkins hitting 30 homeruns in 1993 at the age of 25.

How long do flukes last?

Long enough to be named to the NL All Star team and later shipped to Japan?

In all seruousness, my guess that he's been a career journeyman utility guy, he's long since accepted that he's never going to get the big contract, so he's just saying to hell with it and swinging for the fences, catching pitchers who see him as an easy out off guard, doing so in hopes that some big league team will offer him even a 1 year guaranteed big league deal, or at least a Japanese team.

According to BBR, he's only had 3 seasons earning big league money, between 400,000-525,000. Even if someone gives him like 1 MM, in baseball money, its nothing, but in reality it's a small fortune, especially if you're smart enough to invest it wisely.
