Watkins kind of sucks, but we don't really have anyone better and he's not enough of a prospect for me to care if he gets service time in a situation like this.

Yeah, Watkins had a good April, but has been pretty crappy since. Good walk rate, but strikes out way too much for someone with his power.

I still stand by my stance that Watkins could pull out a few Ryan Theriot (with a better walk rate) seasons where he is a player of decent value. Hopefully he shows enough here that Barney is taken out of the lineup for good. He's terrible now that his defense hasn't been immaculate.

Unfortunately, Theriot was a much better hitter in the minors once he dropped switch-hitting.

Couldn't Lake play some 3rd base now as well? Thought he came up as a SS and had logged some time at 3rd base as well. I really haven't kept up with him the last few years though now and maybe that is no longer an option.

If the alternative is playing logan watkins and whoever that other douche was today in the starting lineup, then management has already punted the season and it doesn't matter whether lake plays 3b or catcher or pitches or whatever.

Our infield depth has been atrocious from day one, though. This isn't just a punting thing.

Watkins season has been thoroughly disapointing after the hot start he had. The thing that has really stood out to me the last three or four weeks is that he hasn't been drawing many walks. I have to wonder if his lack of power is catching up to him and pitchers are just challenging him to beat them.

 

I still have hope the guy can be a cheap back up for the Cubs for a number of years though. He seems like a player that can sub in at multiple defensive positions and thrive in a pinch hitter role by forcing wild relief pitchers to throw strikes. Along with Lake, and maybe Szczur, the Cubs could have a good, young, cheap bench to go with their potential-stud starting lineup.
