I ask this without knowing the answer, how many people drafted after the respective cub in their respective year would people take over Baez, Almora, and Bryant?

It's probably too early to tell with any of those three drafts but the one with a good argument in 2011 is Jose Fernandez. Addison Russell is a better prospect than Almora and Corey Seager has also looked fantastic. In 2013, Jonathan Gray probably has the best chance.

Sure, but both teams? Chicago is generally pretty bad at sports for being such a big market.

not really. the blackhawks are the class of the NHL, the bulls finished with the best record 2 straight years (and will be elite again this year if rose is okay), and the bears are usually at least interesting.

Ew, hockey. And you're right about the Bulls; between their recent success and the majesty of the 90's they're basically singlehandedly saving the town from being a complete joke.

well, that and the two championships from the hockey team.

We like to ignore it but the city did have a World Series last decade. And a Super Bowl appearance.

Chicago isn't Cleveland.

actually a lot of those teams are in reasonably big markets - mets, phillies, angels, giants, astros.

Mets - #1 MSA

Angels - #2 MSA

Cubs/White Sox - #3 MSA

Houston - #5 MSA

Philly - #6 MSA

Marlins - #8 MSA (who don't care about the Marlins unless they're good)

Giants - #11 MSA

Toronto is around Houston's size in population.

Keep in mind the San Francisco MSA is separate from the San Jose MSA per the Census Bureau but the Giants rightfully claim San Jose as part of their regional base. If you combine San Francisco/Oakland's MSA with San Jose's, you've got a much bigger market.

The Cubs are now a half game behind the White Sox for the 3rd draft position. The closest team to the Cubs for the 4th pick is the Brewers, who are 2 games back in the standings, but effectively 3 when you include the tie-breaker. From there it's:

3.5 - Twins

3.5 - Blue Jays

4.0 - Giants

4.5 - Angels

5.0 - Padres

5.0 - Mets

5.0 - Phillies

5.5 - Mariners

6.0 - Rockies

Now sitting in third, and looking a lock for top 4.

I wouldn't go quite that far. The Cubs have 29 games left to play and lead the Twins for the 4th pick by a game and a half in the standings and 2 1/2 with the tie-breaker. They lead the Brewers by 3 1/2 games and will face them 7 times before the season ends. Nothing's a lock quite yet, but their chances have definitely improved since the all-star break that they will have a top 5 pick.

I really hate that the Cubs stink.

It's [expletive] depressing. If they're this bad next season, that's when I start to lose faith in Theo & Co.

This was a good day as far as the Cubs chances of winding up with the 4th pick next year.

The Cubs lost while both the Brewers and Twins got unlikely wins teams playing to get into the playoffs.

The 1st three held steady. Astros, Marlins, White Sox...

Cubs........--

Twins......1.5

Brewers...2.5

Mariners..3.0

Mets........4.0

Rockies....4.5

Blue Jays..5.0

When you add in the tiebreaker (assuming everyone ends up playing 162 games), the Cubs have a 2.5 game lead over the Twins and are 3.5 ahead of the Brewers with 13 games left to play.

In what could be a decisive series, the Cubs are next in Milwaukee for a 4 game series. They then face the Braves and Pirates at home and finish on the road against the Cardinals. After the Cubs, the Brewers face the Cardinals, Braves and finish the year with a 4 game road stand against the Mets. The Twins travel to Chicago for a 3 game set against the White Sox, then to Oakland for 4 games. They finish at home hosting the Tigers and the Indians.

It's still way too early to feel comfortable about getting the 4th pick, but the magic number to wind up there now stands at 12 (because the Twins have 14 left to play). For the 5th pick, it's 11.

It's not mathematically certain, but save for some extreme circumstances, the Cubs have clinched a protected pick next year. They are 7 games behind #11 San Francisco with 10 games to play.

Looks like we have a pick between 4-6 locked up (probably either 4 or 5) barring a crazy winning streak in the last 9 games. 5 game lead in the loss column over Milwaukee, NYM, and Colorado whom are all tied for the #7 pick and a 3 game lead in the loss column over Seattle who is #6.
