I'm sure it was their preference to extend Garza as well but that didn't happen either.

I'm not sure it was.

Sure it was; just on their own terms, and that wasn't Garza's preference. Hard to blame him judging by the upcoming free agent class. Somebody's sure to give him a lot more money than we ever would have.

Of course it would be their preference to extend any not terrible players on their terms. That's not really what's being talked about.

I do believe that they sincerely wanted to work something out, but unless we were offering Hamels money, it's hard to blame him for wanting to test the market. If he remains healthy the rest of the year, he could be looking at an insane payday.

almost everything that's ever been reported about garza since theo/jed took over made it pretty clear their plan on along was to likely trade him. i'm sure they were open to the possibility of keeping him if they could get a discount at some point, but they clearly weren't interested in paying market value for him + giving up the return they'd inevitably get in trade.

The Cubs had no real plans to extend Garza unless it was well under market value, we've been over this numerous times before.

Whether it's regarding Garza or Samardzija, I still don't get why it's any kind of news that a team would like to pay a non-free agent price to a player under team control who, accordingly, isn't yet a free agent. No [expletive].

It's not news, it's traffic.

Didn't he do that with the thread title?

The thread title says the preference is to extend Shark. The hyperlink says they're listening to offers. The point of the thread doesn't appear to be to elicit discussion but to drive page clicks to the poster's website/article, which isn't really what we do.

That Jesse Rogers is a real hoot.

Find it mildly interesting that both Sullivan and Heyman note that the Cubs would consider actively shopping him if they didn't get an extension this winter. May be reaching in this assessment, but it almost feels like someone is intentionally leaking this to send a message. My guess is that they'll get him signed down, maybe something like 5/75?, but sure seems that the deck is open.

Sure, its out there to put a bit of pressure on him. Even still, if he won't sign, I'd say its likely we go into 2014 with him in the rotation, unless someone overpays.
