Porcello "never being considered a guy with elite stuff" is a head scratcher.

Is it? I thought he was more of a refined, pitchibility type from the time he was drafted. Am I wrong about that?

Re-reading the 2007 draft thread, there's multiple mentions of his 95+ fastball and plus changeup, and even a comparison to Verlander(before the Tigers drafted him).

I think the fact that he couldn't strike anyone out until late April of this season has clouded the perception of his stuff.

one of these days you'll have to explain to me why Castro's and Vitters' ages should be brought up as a defense of every criticism whereas Porcello's is always just swept under the rug

Thats cool. If I'm wrong on the stuff, then I'm wrong. I guess I want to see more results though, before I'm comfortable giving him north of 75 mill, based mainly on his age and peripherals that have yet to transfer into results. Granted, he does have 2 years to change my mind.

Which is what I remembered. Thanks for doing the digging.

Unless my memory fails me, he was considered a top 10 draft prospect who fell due to signability concerns.

You'll notice I haven't defended Castro much since his untimely death this season. There's a certain level of discouragement from a player who spends that many years on the same level and his end results don't get any better.

ETA: There's also a pretty sizable difference in what type of product Castro and Vitters were when they entered the Cubs system (not to mention who knows what they were being taught) compared to Porcello upon entering Detroit's

If memory serves, it was closer to top 5.

I keep coming back to Garza to Boston. They have 4 strong pitching prospects not including Webster. It always hurts less to deal from a position of depth. The Red Sox could trade one of Owens, Ranaudo, De La Rosa or Barnes and feel a lot better about it than a team who only has one pitcher of that quality.

Ortiz is 37 and signed thru 2014. Vogelbach seems like a good fit here, though it's a bit early to be trading him. He might bring back more after having a good year at a higher level, but he's been pounding the ball of late in Kane County.

Garza, Gregg and Vogelbach for one of Owens/Ranaudo/Barnes, Rubby De La Rosa and Blake Swihart.
