Rock Shoulders may not be keeping up his insane early season pace, but he's not going away. Before tonight, was at .269/.375/.502. Any chance he makes his way to Daytona in the near future?

Why?

almora 2-5 with 2 doubles.

i'm having an increasingly difficult time getting excited about vogelbach. he really has to hit to have value, and this year he just hasn't hit enough.

My thoughts as well. He hasn't pulled an Amaya or Hernandez, put definitely disappointing up to this point.

i guess the bad thing about drafting all these pitchers is that the hitting prospects in short season ball are truly uninspiring. this has to be about the least interesting AZL cubs offense in a long time.

I'm feeling pretty confident that Szczur becomes a very good 4th OFer for us. I hope he gets bumped to AAA soon.

paniagua pitched again: 4ip, 1h, 0r, 0bb, 5k. clearly he's too old/good for the DSL, but what can ya do.

Just saw that. You can't hope for anything better than that. As meaningless as it is. Its still really good to see.

I would consider it a vindication of the investment the Cubs put into him if he gave them a Reed Johnson type player off the bench. But can he be more than that?

Average age of a legit college prospect when they join pro ball is around 21. The good ones usually spend some time in short season ball and then progress to Low-A. I haven't been considering Szczur as anything special lately. But when you factor out the adjustment time to a new level most players experience when promoted late in the year, these are his slashes as an age appropriate prospect so far:

2011 Low-A (21): .314/.366/.431 in 274 AB, 17 out of 22 stolen base attempts, 28/21 K/BB.

2012 High-A (22): .295/.394/.407 in 295 AB, 38 out of 50 stolen base attempts, 50/47 K/BB.

2013 AA (23): .301/.371/.395 in 286 AB, 17 out of 24 stolen base attempts, 46/29 K/BB.

The jump from High-A to AA is often described as the toughest in the minors. I would think it is nothing like the jump from AAA to the majors. Assuming Szczur's pattern continues into AAA and he puts up similar numbers next year, he would have a shot to win the CF job in 2015 and be a legit old school lead-off man for the Cubs.

Athleticism, late commitment to baseball, blah blah blah. I don't hear any scouts thinking he can be a good OBP, base stealing, defensively above average, starting CFer in the bigs. Should I be? I fear the answer is no. Any good comps for him?

Weird stat of the night:

20-year-old, Dominican CFer, Jenner Emeterio has stolen 15 bases in 16 attempts in just 19 games. He has just 16 hits on the year. If he didn't have 13 walks to go with them, that stat would be even more impressive...

CF Bobby Hill

Ah, you took the bait. Thank you, Kyle. Your service to the development of Cubs prospect knows no bounds. I guess we can pencil him in as the starting CFer in 2015 now...

If the Cubs like what they see from Ryan Sweeney from here on out, possibly a platoon partner with him next year?

I don't know about meaningless. From what I understand about the DSL, ERA and WHIP should be taken with a grain of salt but the BB/Ks are what's relevant.

He's a 23-year-old facing 17-year-olds. Anything less than dominance would be problematic.

The only thing relevant here is him getting in innings and not getting hurt.

Any good comps for him (Szczur)?

best-case is probably a RH Denard Span, which is an intriguing enough possibility to keep me interested in his development

I wonder if the relevant agencies are letting Paniagua know what the hold-up is with his visa paperwork. I'd hate to think someone is waiting for a payoff but what else could it be unless maybe its something serious they don't want to disclose. He is off any of my prospect lists until I know what is going on.
