As of now, Ryan Sweeney has a line of .357/.426/.521. Obviously, it's going to take a lot more than 42 ABs to escape the LaFoxPauir stigma, but as I said while he was raking away in Iowa, he has the past big league success and versatility as well as being a one time top prospect to separate him from three large men who put a charge into the ball when they happened to make contact.

And off hand, in around the same SSS, does anyone have an idea how the other three matched up with Sweeney when first called up? I'm most interested in the OBP.

I don't expect him to sustain the monster SSS numbers he's put up, but is anyone else beginning to entertain the thought that he could perhaps get back to the type of numbers he had with Oakland in 2008-2010, even if as a 4th/platoon OF? Maybe even a slight boost in OBP and/or slugging to push his OPS into the .800 neighnorhood. He should certainly get the chance if/when DeJesus is traded.

We'd all prefer silence over an obnoxious MSPaint response.

I like Sweeney. He has a good pedigree and skillset, and he's proving useful as a LH reserve OF. You can also say similar things about Borbon, and even if DeJesus is traded there's only really playing time for one of them. The biggest problem is that Sweeney is a free agent after this season, while Borbon has quite a bit of team control remaining. If the FO have a good enough relationship with Sweeney to bring him back they should do it, but I'm apprehensive about giving Sweeney PAs at Borbon's expense in the instance we've traded off DeJesus unless they were really certain he were going to be around in 2014 and possibly beyond.

i'm fine with it just on the slim chance some of the younger free-swingers will see his approach work and have a light bulb go on about working the count, etc.

i realize that's a very remote possibility, but if nothing else it helps restore my blood pressure to normal levels after watching some of the terrible Castillo, Castro ABs

Borbon just seems like an all or nothing player. Either he manages to get on base at a respectable clip and he becomes a lead off hitter ala a lower middle class man's Michael Bourn or he doesn't and he's a spare set of legs for a new team every September until they give out. Sweeney seems like a pretty safe bet to be at least a Reed Johnson. I'd be very intersted in extending him at the right price for 2-3 years to bridge the gap between now and when Almora and Soler are ready.

At the right price; say 12MM, 15MM max. We need someone in the OF until Soler and Almora are ready. Beyond Ellsbury, the FA market doesn't offer much, and now that we've drafted Bryant over pitching, a pick that I do like, I'd prefer use our trade chips toward pitching. And at 3-5MM/year, even if he does end up a platoon guy, he's on the right side of the platoon and should be very tradable if one of the internal options proves ready to take over.

I'm not in favor of giving Sweeny $15 million over 3 years.

Um, yeah. I was thinking about offering him a million for one year.

Thankfully you're not running the FO. Yeah, he's been pretty good but he's not going to hit at this pace all year. He's a decent platoon/4th OF but you don't pay those guys $5M per year. Especially on a team that isn't going to contend next year.

I just wonder if he'd accept that few years?

Hey, come on, he had that one year where he was really, really good and then three years where he was worth about $6 million total. That's definitely the kind of guy you want to lock up for several years AND a good chunk of change!

I'm glad I checked back in on this thread.

This is the first time I've even opened this thread. It was justified.

Maybe I'm a bit off, or even way off on the price. But I stand by my stance that due to lack of internal options and the likely cost of viable external options, he's a guy I'd be very intersted in keeping around for a few years while we wait for Soler and Almora to make their way up. The OF depth chart would look like this;

LF

Soriano/comparable righty (Vitters?)

Sweeney

CF

Sweeney

Righty (Lake? Sappelt? Ha?)

RF

Schierholtz

Righty (Lake? Sappelt? Ha?)

I'm glad this is already a certainty.
