That's a lot of games.

Don't worry. Most of them won't be played due to some combination of inclement weather, flash-flooding, brush fire, locusts or a pre-game pie-eating contest mass casualty event.

With Tropical Storm Andrea expected to come onshore about 100 miles north of Bradenton today (and a forecast of 2-3" of rain in the Tampa area), I'd be surprised if Daytona plays.

On the off chance that these games happen, between them and the draft it's going to be an eventful night of following things on phone while while tag teaming between feeding the baby and keeping the toddler occupied.

First game of Tennessee's DH is currently delayed for "Wet Grounds." Probably pretty doubtful they get any games in.

The Daytona DH has already been cancelled.

Looking like it will just be Iowa and Kane County tonight. But on the plus side... Junior Lake!

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like the Smokies are gonna try to get games in

I'm pretty sure they're gonna have a window in 2014 (I think after the 2014 season). That's when Daytona's contract is up and some spots in the Carolina league might finally open up.

EDIT: Yep, Cubs contract with Daytona is up after 2014. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120919&content_id=38658858&vkey=news_chc&c_id=chc

Pretty sure some Carolina league ones open up then as well. I recall there not really being any openings in the Carolina League the last time Daytona's contract was up.

EDIT 2: Now I'm almost certain that's why the Cubs structured the contract that way. A whopping 5 out of 8 teams in the Carolina League see their contracts end after the 2014 season, including the Winston Salem Dash who were formerly a Cubs High A team. See: http://wiki.soxprospects.com/Player+Development+Contracts . It's also a league Theo is probably most familiar with as the Red Sox flat out own the Salem Red Sox.

IIRC, every Carolina League spot is open after 2014 (except Salem, which is owned by the Red Sox). That said, you can probably cross off about half the list, as there are several teams that have been in long-standing relationships and seem unlikely to change. I did wonder if the Cubs might consider the Potomac Nationals last year, as there were issues with the P-Nats owner and the Nationals, but that seems to be resolved.

Most big league teams' contracts with minor league teams are for two years.

After looking a lit bit more, the Potomac Nationals are also up in 2014 (http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120316&content_id=27335510&vkey=pr_was&c_id=was). That means 6 of the 8 teams are up, with the exception of the Salem Red Sox (owned by Boston) and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (owned by Texas). So even if you cross off half, that leaves 3 openings for the Cubs to get in, likely including a team the Cubs used to be associated with. I'm liking their chances, should they decide to go that route.

Duly noted.

Honestly, I really don't see a fit in the Carolina League, if the P-Nats issues are worked out. THey'll want to keep the Nats if the relationship is smooth. Wilmington and Winston Salem seem relatively unlikely. Didn't Winston Salem build a new stadium specifically for the White Sox? And Wilmington loves the Royals. Frederick is a no. Carolina might be an outside shot. Who am I missing? Myrtle Beach and Salem are no. That leaves the Lynchburg affiliate, which was supposed to be moved, right? The Braves were going to move it and stay in the Carolina League, IIRC.

In other news, Alberto Cabrera probably wishes the delay stuck. Dude is getting hosed by the Generals right now. 5 ER in 3 IP on 9 H and 2 BB with no Ks. Woof.

AA, however, has a single and a BB.

The Mudcats seem like the best bet to me. They've only been an Indians affiliate(or a Carolina league member, for that matter) for a short couple years, the teams the Indians have given them haven't been competitive, and the Indians aren't local or known for their drawing power.

The past few posts seem to be backing the reputation the Carolina League has of less turnover than most other minor leagues, probably in part because your other choices for high-A are the California League or the Florida State League.

Would seem to be the case.

Last time teams changed affiliation:

Carolina Mudcats - 1987

Frederick Keys - 1989 (have never changed)

Lynchburg Hillcats - 2011

Potomac Nationals - 2005

Wilmington Blue Rocks - 2007

Winston-Salem Dash - 1997

I'm apparently losing my mind, because I could've sworn I saw the Mudcats were a Reds affiliate through 2011. Internet playing tricks on my brain.

You're thinking of the Lynchburg Hillcats who were a Reds affiliate just for 2010.
