I would really love to hear the reasoning for Marmol still being on this squad. His salary is a sunk cost. You're not even going to get a lottery ticket for him. All he does is take up a 40 man roster spot and irritate the [expletive] out of me.

Before today, Marmol had a sub-2 ERA since the first week of the season.

He's failed almost every time he's been used in a high pressure spot. That's all one needs to know.

Please pay attention to the topic being discussed. "Marmol shouldn't be pitching in a tie game in the 8th" is not the same as "what excuse does Marmol have for having a roster spot?". No one disagrees with the former, the reason for the latter is the rest of the bullpen is a dumpster fire and that Marmol has been pitching fine for about 8 weeks.

[expletive] off, dale

While I also have issues with bullpen management in this game, I think it should be pointed out that Sveum was tossed in the 2nd inning.

we know this

we believe dale is still calling the shots because he has a history of pretending marmol isn't instant runs for the other team and bringing him into winnable games

Camp, too. I love so much about him as manager, but his loyalty to awful relief pitchers is maddening.

Ha. This could've easily been a reply to my next post, too.

Well as long as Sveum is our manager, having Marmol on the roster is dangerous.

Marmol has a fine ERA for about 8 weeks. That's not the same as pitching fine.

Yeah, I'm not with you here. Arbitrary endpoints. Anything he has done well has been smoke and mirrors.

Again, the point is not "Marmol is good", it's that he's been more effective than the alternatives. Don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than your friend, etc.

He's more effective than Villanueva? No.

Take out his first three appearances, Marmol was still averaging 5.7 BB/9 before tonight.

19 IP, 19 K, 12 BB, 12 H, 1 HR

That's about a 3.75 FIP from my back of the envelope math. Not awesome, not worth "WHY IS HE ON THE ROSTER" hand wringing.

I don't want guys on the roster who have 3.75 FIPs when you cobble the endpoints together to make them look better.

Who said anything about Villanueva? I'm the one who said Villanueva should've stayed in for the 8th. I'm talking about deserving a roster spot.

Ah, OK. I lost track of it for a minute, my apologies.

I don't care which scrubs you get to pitch the low-leverage innings on the back of the roster. But the problem with Marmol's presence there is that our bench just can't resist throwing him into spots like tonight.

That's not a luxury the 2013 Cubs are afforded.

3.75 FIP is good for the season as a whole, not as the highlight of the best stretch of his season.
