GM rumors du jour:Garza to Padres(Reymond Fuentes, 2 other Hoyer/McLeod prospects), Nolasco to Giants.

Am I wrong to feel like this is pretty underwhelming if Fuentes is the best player in the package?

I think our FO is better prepared to see past the .400+ BABIP than Gammons.

Austin Hedges? Joe Ross? Matt Wisler? Casey Kelly?

I'm not interested in Fuentes as the anchor to a Garza trade.

I feel the same way thats a pretty sad centerpiece especially this early in the trade season before things really heat up and people get desperate. I want pitchers in any Garza deal. I don't see Fuentes being all that special.

Yeah, Fuentes as a centerpiece for Garza doesn't do much for me.

On a related note, I was kinda confused why the Padres would want Garza until I checked the standings again and saw they were .500. They've played 15 of 76 games against NL teams currently set to make the playoffs. By comparison, the Cubs have played 34. Unbalanced schedules blow.

What's the best 3 prospects package there? Fuentes/Hedges/Kelly? It's a decent package, but I'm not sure I would pull the trigger on that for Garza. That kind of package is like Plan C when everything else fails and you fall back on that.

Forget Fuentes, I'd take Hedges and Kelly and not think twice.

For Feldman. Maybe.

You guys don't like Hedges? He's probably the best C prospect in the minors. Kelly is a risk, but I'd be very happy with that pair as a Garza return.

He's elite defensively but that bat is very iffy.

If the return for Garza is headlined by a guy below AA and someone who had TJS 3 months ago, then the Front Office has failed.

So, by your thinking, a trade of Garza that waa headlined by Buxton or Correa, is a failure, because they haven't hit AA yet. Hedges will likely see AA at some point this season, by the way.

I do. Hedges would be the centerpiece in the deal (unless it's like Fried or umm... not sure who else as I haven't paid much attention to the Padres farm system this year). Even with Hedges as the centerpiece, it's still not THAT great of a centerpiece. Is he even considered a top 50 prospect at this point? IMO he's not. He's more in the 51-75 range maybe? and if I want to trade Garza, I would like to have a top 50 piece to headline the deal. I guess you could say Kelly is that guy (I think he was top 50 in preseason list from BA IIRC), but I don't. At least not with him having TJS and hasn't pitched yet this year.

What other options that are Hoyer/MacLeod prospects? that Peterson kid in the 1st a couple years ago?

I'd be surprised if Hedges was part of a Feldman package. I'd be pretty jazzed if he was the centerpiece for Garza, though.

There are obvious exceptions that won't ever happen, but really, they illustrate the point. Unless you're getting a truly elite prospect, there's no need to be having low level minor leaguers headline your deadline returns. It's making 2014 worse, potentially causing positional logjams at the levels of greatest depth, and to repeat since it's far and away the most important, it makes 2014 worse.

I know Jason Parks loves Hedges and is going to rank him in his top 15 but elite defense and advanced mental makeup should only take you so far - he's got a .768 OPS in the California League.

It's not that he isn't a good prospect (and I am biased in his favor and hope he and Joe Ross and Max Fried succeed in the big leagues), I just believe he's overrated if he's being ranked in the top 50. I'd want to look elsewhere with regards to the haul you get for Garza; especially with the opportunity to re-sign him or get a draft pick for him if he walks. As TT said, I want the headliner of a Garza trade to be in AA at least.

All this is moot - if legitimate prospect media guys like Jason Parks are going to rank Hedges as a top 15 prospects in all of baseball, the Cubs aren't going to get him for Garza.

From the standpoint of negotiating a contract extension, we've got Garza by the short hairs right now. He's certainly worth tendering a 1 year, 14 mil offer to. But he's not so good that teams will be lining up to give him the contract he wants AND lose their first rounder for the privilege. So we can probably get ourselves a pretty reasonable 2-3 year extension on his contract.

Any Garza trade needs to reflect that leverage. Kelly and Hedges doesn't do that for me.

I'd actually be pretty curious to know how much, if at all, front offices take such opinions into account.

My guess is its no different than the draft. Parks talks to multiple sources from each organization and combines that with his own looks to get his rankings. The Cubs prospect board for other teams likely is done the same way. With it weighted towards their own opinions over others. Which may be different than Parks, who doesn't have nearly as many opinions within BP to go on, as the Cubs have scouts to go off of. In the end, I'm sure the Cubs list has some ghys they just don't want any part of, for whatever reason and there likely are some adjustments on rankings, but I would think a Cubs list of the top 100 prospects has the same feel as Law or Parks list does. Fairly standard, with a few WTF types thrown in.

Do the Giants have any prospects of note left? With Pagan possibly out for the season, I wonder if any of the Cubs OF fit for them.
