Pierce Johnson having another very nice game. Through 4 IP, he's given up 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 and allowing no runs.

Ben Wells 5 no-hit innings.

Unrelated: The increasingly sexy Wilson Contreras has a triple and a walk so far tonight for the Cougars.

Pierce Johnson's final line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 3/6 GO/FO

That's good for a 21/6 K/BB ratio in 18 IP

FIELDING

E: Candelario 2 (6, throw, throw), Hernandez, M (6, throw), Amaya (5, fielding), Vogelbach (3, fielding).

Ugh.

It's going to be an issue figuring out errors for the rest of the infield vs Vogelbach just not being a good first baseman.

FIELDING

Ugh.

I wonder how much of the throwing errors are on Vogelbach for having limited reach/ability at 1B or being awful at picking balls? Would be nice to know if these guys are just sailing balls or if Vogelbach isn't picking them or if they are throwing balls just slightly off that most MLB 1B get.

btw - is Stewart hurt again?

Was wondering that, but they may just have wanted to give him an extra night off.

Already aware. I'm not saying that he comes up and OPS' a zillion, but I think he could do what he did with the A's in '08-'10. I also think that if he and Schierholtz were each given a full season of full time play, the results would be very similar. And surely I don't have to explain how he's very much different from LaHair, Fox, and Hoffpauir.

Vitters went 3/4 with a double while rehabbing in Arizona (the out was nearly a HR). He also played in an intrasquad game yesterday, going 0/3 with a walk.

Almora is finally starting BP; he's on his way to in-game action.

Trey Lang threw 3 no-hit innings in today's game. Duane Underwood threw 3 scoreless in the intrasquad game, giving up only one hit but walking three.

Also, three new Dominican pitchers just arrived - RHP Alexander Santana (possibly Mesa's best pitcher this summer), 22-year old RHP Juan Francisco who hit 97 and LHP Angel Mejias. Also, LHP Carlos Rodriguez, who had a great season in the DSL last year, threw in a sim game and will probably start pitching in the regular ExST games soon.

Do we know if Daury Torrez will be joining him or back in the DSL?

Wells must have had good stuff. Only 2 balls left the infield and one was a groundball single. I'm counting 2 balls that were even able to be pulled by the hitters.

Torrez is in the US but sidelined with some sort of ailment. As the best pitching prospect the Cubs had in the DSL, if he were healthy, he would pitch in the AZL this summer.

Hopefully that the ailment is something along the lines of a stomach virus rather than arm related.

If he has mono, there should be an investigation.
