What incentive does NBC have to pay up for the Cubs/Hawks if they don't have to?

 

Is this a matter of getting providers to foot the bill? They are stuck with NBC since they need NBC on their side in order to get out of the current agreement, right?

 

Anyone know what the Hawks' current TV agreement looks like?

Comcast/NBC is attempting to position itself as a competitor to ESPN, which is the behemoth of all cable networks and especially sports. NBC wouldn't necessarily be "paying up" for Cubs/Hawks without having to, but rather positioning itself to dominate the Chicago sports market for the next generation. The thought is possibly that while they are making money off of CSN, that agreement runs out in a couple years and if they aren't involved, that network could conceivably disappear with the four teams making arrangements with other networks. Comcast doesn't want other networks in Chicago, so, much like a team that locks up a pre-arbitration player to a favorable contract, they could keep the Cubs on board and on their family of networks by making them an offer that is considerably higher than the current deal while still lower than what it would theoretically cost to let them become free agents in 2019.

That makes sense. As much as I want them to make super crazy buckets of money with a Cubs network, this might be a happy medium that gets us out of having to wait for 2019 (and worrying about the bubble bursting in the meantime).

Agreed. I just can't shake the feeling that the Cubs aren't going to get anything close to the new "market value" and I really don't want to wait until 2020 for significant added revenue.

I really, really, really want to be a more positive person going forward, but [expletive], they're doing their best to make it tough. I'd kill for one singular, definitive bit of news a la the excitement of getting Theo. At this point just breaking ground on the Jumbotron would have me crying tears of joy.

Welp, there's a small jumbotron in left center already up...in the Cubs new facility in Mesa. Suck it, non-existent Mesa rooftop owners.

Baseball is an extremely popular regional sport. These regional sport networks are going to make bank. I don't think there is going to be a bubble. I just hope the Ricketts can find some way to cash in sooner than 2020.

Jumbotron is a brand, like Kleenex right? Maybe it's not accurate? Maybe it's just a small video board.

On Saturday on The Score Bruce Levine insisted that in 2019-2020 the Cubs will have a media deal for $170M(over $1M per game). He said currently the club brings in $600K+ per game on local tv. He also mentioned the White Sox would be in the same revenue range. That really floored me. The Sox don't have the fan base locally or nationally to bring in that kind of money.

According to the article below it's even less, though Brett admits it's not verified but rumored. They get $300k a game from WGN and $500k a game from Comcast.

A friend at WGN radio told me the TRIB lost $85K profit for each Cubs game not broadcast during the strike in the 90's. Seemed like a cash cow to me.
