Pretty depressing to find out that Dazmon Cameron, the early odds-on favorite to be picked first overall in 2015, is Mike Cameron's son.

Just wait until Woody's son is a prospect.

Sounds like Texas prep righty Tyler Kolek just blew up at the PG Showcase:

@TGold_PG: You know your seeing something special when hundreds of scouts simultaneously go silent: 2014 RHP Tyler Kolek (Shepherd, TX) is the cause...

@Clint_BA: Big, strong bodied RHP Tyler Kolek sits 93-95 in first

@TGold_PG: 2014 RHP Tyler Kolek (Shepherd, TX) sat 92-95 with severe downhill leverage and + extension, flashed + SL in 1st IP of #PGNational

@TGold_PG: 2014 RHP Tyler Kolek (Shepherd, TX) SHOVED in 2nd IP of #PGNational no FB under 95, touched 97, mixed his + slider well, K'd side. #MLBDraft

@kileymcd: Tyler Kolek doesn't hit 100 but sat 93-96 and hit a 97 in a two inning stint, finishing with a sharp 78 mph curve to K the last hitter.

@FPilierePG: Tyler Kolek just pounded the zone at 95-96, topped 97 in his second inning. Easy velo #PGNational

@KendallRogersPG: The young Texan making some moves. RT @PGAndyFord: #PGNational Tyler Kolek's 2nd inning at Metrodome left me speechless!

He's topped out at 100 before.

SHOVED?

I'm wondering if auto-correct got that because I have no clue otherwise.

googling shoved and baseball leads to some interesting results that I do not think apply in this situation.

edit: and I think one of those was actually a softball bat

It's not hard to understand why it's been reported that Jackson is McLeod's favorite prospect. Ever.

I don't know if the FO is shooting for this result, but I have been rooting for the Cubs to get good performances out of their tradeable assets and development from their young veterans while losing as many games as possible since Theo and Co. took over. A top five pick, hopefully as high as third with a comp pick and whatever prospects can be brought in via trade is just what the doctor ordered for the Cubs rebuild.

It's a long time before the 2014 draft, but, in some probably sick way, I'm already looking forward to it. 97 more games of futility please.

SHOVED?

It can be used to describe a pitcher dominating. I've heard it used in that sense before.

Apparently.

@T23Lang: My boy @24_PaulyB absolutely shoved tonight! #StrikeOutMachine #Filthy

(Trey Lang commenting on his Boise teammate Paul Blackburn's dominant start this evening.)

Carlos Rodon and NC State are on ESPN2 right now. Rodon's slider has been fantastic and he's been carving up UNC's vaunted offense for 5 innings thus far.

Rodon throws a ridiculous number of sliders

Appel threw a lot of sliders and changes. For some time now, I've felt like college coaches call too many non-FBs.

If you guys want to see Rodon on 3 days rest, he's starting in an hour against UNC.

Big break for UCLA.

Everyone's freaking out on Twitter about him pitching tonight and maybe they'll be justified in the end. But it IS his scheduled throw day and if he goes 50 pitches or so, I see no real harm with it. If they let him go 100, its another story obviously. But they've made it sound like he'll just go a few innings and originally had it planned for him to pitch in middle relief.

I don't care. The odds are slim the Cubs will actually draft him and this means UCLA won't face him.

Kiley McDaniel rates his top 5 prep pitching prospects - 1. RHP Tyler Kolek (TX), 2. RHP Dylan Cease (GA), 3. RHP Touki Toussaint (FL), 4. RHP Grant Holmes (SC) and 5. RHP Luis Ortiz (CA).

Said he could rank the top 3 in any order and it's very close.

As I noted on twitter from the Perfect Game National Showcase in Minneapolis last week, the biggest early storyline about the 2014 MLB Draft is the obscene depth of the high school pitching class. My running tally at the event of potential top five round type arms nearly hit 60 and is sure to surpass that number as I discover more arms this summer/fall. Being that these pitchers will be under the microscope for the next year, I wanted to make the free preview of my subscription content for the 2014 MLB Draft the top pitchers from this very deep group.

I think these five guys have separated themselves a bit after the first major events of the summer, with the Tournament of Starts at the USA Baseball complex in Cary, NC happening right now, with some scouts sending me updates that I included below. That said, all of the prep players in this draft class are 17 or even 16 right now and even the most famous ones that have been seen the most still have limited looks in the scope of what scouts will know on draft day. So, as a I note below, these are the best of a deep group that will get shuffled a good bit from now to draft day, with a very strong second tier just missing this list that I'll get into next week.

Sounds like Jacob Gatewood just went off at TOS Saturday. Frank Pilliere who never makes comps was the second person to drop a Troy Tulowitski comp on Gatewood (Kiley McDaniel was the first).

Sounds like the prep class next year is going to be fantastic with Alex Jackson, Gatewood and all those arms.

Won't draft because he'll go before their pick or because the FO will go in another direction?

More just the statistical likelihood the Cubs will draft any single player versus the field, especially since they won't have the first pick in the draft.

That said, the current FO has definitely backed up their talk of not favoring taking arms high in the first round.

At this point, Alex Jackson falling to the Cubs would make smile.

I wonder if the apparent depth of the 2014 draft would come into play with Cubs decision to trade/extend Garza. That comp pick they could get might be more valuable than normal.
