Rodon started his Thursday start this past weekend 94-96 in the first (his working velocity last season) but was 86-92 the rest of the night. Kiley McDaniel said Trea Turner is definitely ahead of Rodon as a prospect.

Rodon has had a few starts with down velocity and command issues, but this was his first start where he dipped into the mid-80s. Definitely something to watch going forward.

And that is why people who were talking about tanking for Rodon in 2013 like a year ago are insane.

full disclosure - i might have said something like that at some point. if i did, i was being stupid.

Maybe Rodon is a future closer? Is a dominant closer worth a the 1st overall pick in the draft?

Hell [expletive] no

Until a month ago, he was able to sustain mid-90s in every collegiate start. This is dead arm or an injury, no need to pigeon hole him. If he continues to be ineffective, there are a host of better prospects at the top (Trea Turner, Tyler Beede, Michael Conforto, Jeff Hoffman, Austin Cousino).

And I'd never knowingly take a closer in the first round, let alone 1.1.

I'd have a hard time taking a guy you know's going to end up in the pen anywhere in the first.

Welcome to NSBB!

And I generally agree.

I agree. I don't ever want my team to tank a season intentionally for the hope of some great prospect being available to draft. But I also don't want to reach mediocrity in year two of a rebuild. If you've got a shot to make the playoffs, then go for it. If not, then in the immortal words of Randolph Duke, "Sell, Sell, Sell!!"

Jon Garland? Ugh.

Can you imagine if we traded Baez and Almora for middle relievers this year? ROFL.

Before we go dropping Rodon too far, this is the first start where his velocity has dipped the badly. He had an erratic start against UVA ... and still held a good lineup to 2 H and 2 R's (I think) a couple weekends ago. His ceiling is still that much higher than anyone else in 2014 if he comes close to showing the form he had last year.

That said, there's been speculation of an injury, so it is something to watch. If he is hurt, he'd be better off just calling it a season and doing whatever is needed to get ready for 2014 (surgery now, if it's needed, would put him in line to be back by some point in 2014, barring delays).

Tyler Beede will be pitching on ESPNU today at 4 PM Central - Missouri at Vanderbilt.

Rodon gave up 5 in only 2 innings today. I think Cedaroth probably has passed him up at this point. Beede possibly as well.

Not yet.

In my eyes, Beede is still ahead of Cederoth. Both those pitchers have flaws in their game (Beede: control, Cederoth: inconsistent secondary pitches).

Aaron Nola may pass up them all.

Thats possible too. Seems like we could get the same caliber of player at 10 next year that we'll get at 2 this year. May not be a clear cut 1 next year, if its not Rodon, but man, its much, much deeper. Supposedly the case with HS kids as well.

I think Nola is currently behind Rodon (at the top of his game - in his current state, he's obviously come back to the pack), Beede and Cederoth.

I haven't watched him pitch this year (surprising since he's on a higher profile team than Rodon or Cederoth) but the reports I have seen about his stuff haven't been glowing as Beede and Cederoth's. Here is Aaron Fitt writeup of Nola at LSU-Arkansas this weekend - his stuff doesn't read like top 5 material:

Baseball America[/url]"]Nola dominated Arkansas primarily by pitching down in the zone and at the corners with his lively fastball, which hit 93-94 mph repeatedly in the early innings and still sat at 91 in the ninth. He didn’t have his best feel for his 76-79 breaking ball and his 82-84 slider, but he still mixed those pitches in effectively. The fastball, though, was his bread and butter.

“My fastball location was working tonight,” Nola said. “The whole game I couldn’t really find my curveball, but I got a couple good curveballs in there with two strikes, got a couple strikeouts with that. It took me a little while to find my changeup a little bit, but I made the clutch pitches when I needed to, and our defense was phenomenal with all those plays, and our offense was clutch.”

Also, I think Trea Turner is the most likely at this point to replace Rodon at 1.1 at this point. Billy Hamilton's success in the minors is only going to help Turner.

And don't sleep on the trio of outfielders (Conforto, Cousino and Fisher).

Carlos Rodon probably had his best start of the season yesterday. Stuff was good throughout the start and he went the distance, striking out 10 and walking none.
