If we're looking at a trade right now, its to create an open 40 man spot. Maybe more than one, if Hairston is a possibility. Which I think he is. If Lake or whoever is dealt, I'd expect it to be for pitching, thats not on the 40 man currently.

Or they could do a 2 for 1 deal as marlon bystro was saying and it would be for a 40 man guy, but more of a 2 for one "upgrade". My target would be for a near ready pitcher.

That's what I'm hoping for too. Lake + Szczur to SD for one of Kelly/Erlin/Wieland? Too much? Too little?

Can someone sell me on Casey Kelly? Is there something other than his age and apparent "readiness" to start in an MLB rotation that makes him special? His numbers don't look all that great, and it seems like he's been battling injuries most of his time in the minors. Why is he one of the guys most people bring up when discussing San Diego prospects that everyone seems to hope we can acquire?

Hard throwing lefty, and (I believe) a hometown guy.

I'm not a huge fan, myself.

San Diego isn't likely to be a team that'd be in position to trade with us right now, at least not in that type of deal. Their 40 man is full, not even counting 2 guys they have on the suspended list. If anything, they're probably trying 2 for 1's themselves. As for Kelly, I like his control, plus he's a good athlete and throws pretty hard, although I think the velo has dropped a bit since his injury.

As I recall, he's pretty new to pitching, but very athletic with a clean delivery. So you'd be getting him for his upside, with the hope that the numbers improve. I always thought he was overhyped because he was drafted by the Red Sox.

It is now day 33 since Carlos Villanueva's agreeing to terms was reported, and still not official.

He probably caught that car crash cancer going around

My guess is when Rehman mentioned it'd be a few days, he took into account the league offices were closed Monday. With no leaking of a trade, I'm feeling a Campana DFA on the horizon tomorrow.

Delmon Young to the Phillies, pretty much shutting down the already pretty dead Soriano rumor mill.

Dude, Philly's getting a Delmon

Phillies Sign Delmon Young

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 22 at 1:52pm CST]

The Phillies announced that they signed Delmon Young to a one-year, $750K contract. The deal includes roster and performance bonuses that could bring the value of the contract to the $3.25MM range,

[expletive], for that price, I'd have happily gotten a Delmon, warts and all.

And while it's likely that this marks the end of the Phillies as a suitor for Soriano, Young joins Dom Brown, Darin Ruf, John Mayberry, and Laynce Nix in a battle for the Phillies 2 corner OF spots. None of the 5 strike me as sure things, especially to an aging team in win now mode.

Except when traded mid-season.

I figured it out. I was thinking of Casey Crosby.

Braves-D'Backs "seriously" discussing a J. Upton trade. Upton/Uggla/Heyward/Upton/Freeman/Prado/Whatever is left of McCann is a very nice offense. Reportedly Simmons won't be in the trade, which is weird, because the Braves don't have a lot of good position prospects other than him and really only have pitching, which is what the D'backs have a strength of already.
