I just think its funny he toiled as our 4th/5th OFer for 2 years and several years later is a coveted FA worthy of that kind of deal.

I share that feeling. It also takes me back to Gary Matthews Jr.

I'm willing to bet the Cubs have made that call

Jon Morosi @jonmorosi

Keep an eye on Mike Olt at the winter meetings. One rival club official believes #Rangers are willing to trade him.

Ian Stewart, who recently got a clean bill of health with his hand/wrist problems, suddenly has drawn wide interest from teams looking for 3B

I don't suppose they are interested in aging outfielders...

The #Dbacks have been very aggresssive at winter meetings shopping RF Justin Upton, but no team has stepped up to give them frontline SS

Pagan had 318 at bats with the Cubs in his age 25/26 seasons. He went .254/.309/.415 with 16 doubles, 4 triples, 9 homers, and 8 steals. There was no reason at all for us to just give him away.

That was also a much different run environment. When the Cubs got rid of Pagan he was going on 27 years old and had been easily below average in 2 part time seasons. He could've been handled differently, but players in that situation get pushed out all the time, especially guys like Pagan who were never well regarded prospects.

He also went through that really bad bout with colitis that caused him to lose a lot of strength. I can't really fault Hendry for moving him when the Mets came asking because it looked like he wasn't going to amount to much.

Great move for them. Edwin Jackson's likely to move on. They have a great, young 1-4. 13MM could buy them the best 5 starter in baseball if all goes well. If not, they can trade for an average 5 starter mid season.

I read something about how they may be willing to move Kinsler to 1B/LF. In that case, maybe Barney and Garza could be used for Olt+something else. With Garza's injury, I'm not sure he gets Olt alone anymore.

Nationals do exceptional job in signing Haren to one-year contract..his back issues are manageable and he's a definite up-grade from Jackson

hahahahaha

I really wonder what the Nats are going to do now. I thought they were in on the Rays starters, but the Haren signing all but rules that out. I guess the easiest expectation is to simply slot Morse at first, but there's a part of me that wonders if they may use Morse to restock the system and try to sign LaRoche back for the defensive help he provided (Zimmerman sailed balls early in the year, and as talented as Desmond is, he can occasionally throw a wild one).

Either way, it's shaping up to be a very good winter for Mike Rizzo and Co., getting Harper out of CF, getting Werth out of the top of the lineup, and keeping their stacked rotation.

I wonder what else it would take for teams to agree on a Barney/Garza to KC, Butler to TEX and Olt to CHC. I would think TEX would have to send the Cubs and/or Royals something else, but I really don't know.

Royals need a SP and would like a 2B and don't want to give up Myers/Moustakas/Hosmer/Perez.

Olt is nowhere near a sure enough prospect to trade Barney + Garza.

He really fits the profile of the type of player our front office looks for. Good eye, good defense, power, etc. The only question is whether he can hit for enough average (and he really only has to hit around .250 to be extremely valuable).

This is exactly what was said about Brett Jackson one year ago.

Is Barney/Garza too much for Moustakas? Is Butler too much for Olt?

I like Moustakas better than Olt at this point - he's actually a few days younger and has had success in the majors. Given the relative contract status of everyone involved, it's probably a fair deal.

Butler/Olt is probably fair. Butler would rake in Arlington, but provides near zero positional value.

That doesn't mean that every such case is going to be a trainwreck.

No - but it does serve as a good warning about the risky nature of prospects with high strikeout rates in the minors.

remember that Gary had some help from PED's....which may explain his sudden ascension to stardom(or near stardom) Don't know about Pagan but never thought he be more than a 4th outfielder.

@jcrasnick #Redsox, #Cubs and #Yankees also checking in on Victorino. #Braves and #reds .. not so much. #Phillies interest is tepid.
