I hope we keep Chapman and Putnam somehow. But moving them off the 40 man gives us solid flexibility.

I'm a little surprised at how that worked. I thought the renewal deadline was in like January or something.

Yeah, I'm not sure they HAD to be moved today or not. Texas NT'd Brigham, by the way. His shoulder must be messed up pretty bad. Oh and Giants NT'd Wilson, for the biggest name winner, if it hasn't been mentioned yet.

Hey guys, everyone's favorite closer, Brian Wilson, was non-tendered and is now a free agent!

Also, just rounding out other notables so far:

Geovany Soto

Brandon Snyder

Jake Brigham (heh)

Two-Pitch Rich

John Lannan

Tom Gorzelanny

Jesus Flores

Why are you mentioning these players' prospect status'? All of them have lengthy MLB track records.

Because the bulk of the 2011-2012 offseason was acquiring former top prospects with poor-mediocre MLB track records but are still young enough that there's a glimmer of hope. Each of the players I mentioned fit that bill with the exception of Jurrjens who's only 26 and had a few very good seasons and Moylan who'd be a nice low risk piece for the pen.

Geovany Soto

Geovany Soto?

Shocking I know. He was so good for so long. And so consistent. I still can't believe we even traded him. He clearly has value.

Brian Wilson is pissed that the Giants released him and has said he has no interest in resigning with San Francisco. I wonder who would make a play for him.

As long as we're not throwing any big money around this season, why not just sign a bunch of these guys to smaller, incentive based deals? Say Pelfrey and Sweeney 1/2.5+ options&incentives, Jurrjens 2/7+incentives, and Schlereth to a minor league deal. With only about 6MM added to the 2013 payrollEven if we strike silver with 1, bronze with another, and [expletive] with 2, it's a win. With only about 6MM added to the 2012 payroll. so long as we're willing to dedicate the roster spots.

Probably because Jurrjens is 100% done. His velocity continues to fall and he only struck out like 3.5 per 9 innings last year. Sweeney has no upside and the Cubs already have 5 pitchers who are better than Pelfrey so there's no need to add another back of the rotation arm.
