In one of the most exciting stories of the year, Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports reports that the New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans, possibly as soon as the 2013-14 NBA season.

Wow, terrible.

I think you misspelled "[expletive] fantastic", Smack

hang up and listen did a big thing several months ago about what the new name should be, and one of the guys was plugging pelicans. i loved it then and i love it now.

yeah, i like the name too. a pelican would devour a cardinal, blue jay, or oriole, i don't see why it's so ridiculous.

None of those are NBA team names though.

Could certainly devour a Hornet.

Also, seeing as the NBA has a teams named for: a body of water it's city doesn't even have, pants, a type of sail boat, being warm, magic (and those who cast it), the concept that Utah has anything to do with Jazz, cowboy accessories, and the net on the [expletive] basket, no one has any room to hate on the amazingness of a team being named after Pelicans. They also happen to be the state bird and appear on the state flag and seal.

In sum: [expletive] PELICANS

Just imagine a t-shirt with a pelican with a Anthony Davis unibrow, this merch sells itself.

I would almost certainly buy that shirt.

those pelicans unis are awesome

back during the pre-thunder days, someone suggested an Oklahoma City Settlers team name and the uniforms were amazing. obviously we're stuck with what we've got now.

Not a fan of the actual Pelican in their primary/alternate logo. It seems like a 7 year old drew it up. Maybe it'll look better in person. Besides that, I like everything else. Even the wordmark although it reminds me of the Clippers.

Those Pelicans unis posted above aren't official. Someone did them for a Uni Watch thing earlier this year.

The color scheme on the real ones will be navy, red and gold; beyond that, we're likely months from anything being decided, much less shown.

Navy and red? Awful.

The runners up to Pelicans were Krewe and Brass. Krewe would have been awesome. Pelicans just seems like a pretty wimpy name.

Except nobody would have known what it meant.
