It's too bad that the NBA players don't do the MLB rehab thing, going down to the developmental league to rehab before playing in NBA games. Doe these guys have contract language prohibiting them from a stint in the D-League while rehabbing?

Rehab stint for a semi-contact sport sounds pointless/dangerous.

MLB guys use it to work back up to a full pitching load or get their timing back on their swing. There's no benefit to going to play against inferior competition.

So the assumption here is that Rose is 1.) an idiot 2.) a liar or 3.) mentally weak?

I honestly haven't followed the beat writers closely enough to know. Is the consensus generally its all up to Rose now or is there any hint the organization is holding him back. Several months ago the runors were that Garpax were gonna hold him out.

You really haven't been following closely.

The source that leaked the news that he was medically cleared to play and that his doctors think playing is necessary to complete the remodeling of his knee came from Jerry Reinsdorf. So, the opposite of the organization holding him back. They sold him out a little bit.

Thanks for checking in. :)

I'm a pretty big Rose fan, but he's certainly not going to be accused of being intelligent by anyone. Part 2 is harder to answer. A lot of layers there? Did he tell Reggie to speak up? Is he sitting out to prove a point? None of us truly know.(my feeling is yes, to both) Part 3? Ties into part 2 somewhat, but my answer changes to no. I think its a copout and an excuse to sit out, because he's not a 100%, during what he feels is a lost season. It's just a different type of athlete than it used to be. MJ would have been back the day he was cleared. Now, Adidas has as much say with Derrick as the Bulls do, arguably more. Personally, I wouldn't question his mentality though, I just think its a product of the times. The gist of this discussion though: I side with N&G, he's medically cleared-he should be out there. I'd just call him selfish and leave it at that, instead of digging deeper.

If he's medically cleared, I see no reason for him to not be playing. If he's worried right now about re-injuring his knee when it is structurally sound, I don't understand how not playing until next season is going to change his frame of mind.

I don't even think he's selfish or mentally weak or anything like that. I guess if I had to pick it would be "not very bright coupled with unrealistic expectations of himself." Supposedly he's hung up on the idea of coming back less than 100%, like it's somehow possible for his return to be this instantly triumphant thing like in the Reebok commercials. It's as if he's thinking everyone expects him to be amazing when he gets back, so he doesn't want to come back at anything less than amazing. Unfortunately it's a catch-22 situation where he's never going to get back to amazing if he doesn't first get a feel for his game again and play limited minutes and such.

Well, there is, and it's been expressed very clearly repeatedly in this thread.

And saying that "medical science isn't perfect" seems to amount to more than little more than throwing one's hands up and just saying, "OK, he play whenever." Your best information is to go off of what the doctors and trainers are saying...what else are you supposed to use as the primary information?

I have not seen it expressed clearly in this thread yet. So maybe I'm a dumb dumb, but maybe you can tell me again what benefit it is to have Rose play tomorrow as opposed to two weeks from now?

Because the sooner he gets back on the court the sooner they can figure out what type of player he is and what he's capable of after an injury this bad. That's going to impact how they re-construct the team going forward.

i don't think it's all that outrageous or even malicious to suggest that there's some mental midgetry going on for rose right now. i don't buy the argument that he has unrealistic expectations. actually, i think it's one of the least-likely scenarios here. for him to think that he would be returning to the game of professional basketball in 100% playing condition would require profound stupidity and an uncanny ability to tune out everything that everybody has ever said about returning from a major injury

is he being deceitful by prolonging his rehab artificially in order to manipulate his employer? i certainly can't personally speak to his character, but that seems unlikely

right now is a bit of a no-man's land. sure, he's been cleared to play, but we're not so far removed from being cleared and the return to full practice/actual basketball that bulls fans should line up at the berto center with pitchforks and flaming torches

if he doesn't come back this season? unleash the meatballery

Yeah, but he DOES seem really dumb.

Or, he's not very excited about the team and what it can accomplish.

I know. His brother opened the door to it. I shouldn't repeat it, or attribute it to Derrick, but I can't help but wonder since it isn't making much sense to me right now.

Thibs said 'We'll see" when asked if Rose is playing tonight?

Yeah but he also backed off that a bit after that, saying nothing's changed, that neither he or Rose knows when he'll play.

Then he's still an idiot; the quality of the team shouldn't impact his efforts to rehab from the injury and figure out just what the hell kind of player he is at this point.
