What's the point of re-signing Bowman? He sucked last year.

I believe it's to cover for a banged up McManis on special teams.

I don't think any of those guys would have played left tackle any better.

You're allowed to draft other positions. But point taken.

It didn't seem like it had to end. CW was remaking his career as a decent guard. Maybe not a great one, but I thought we could still use him. I guess he just didn't fit the mold of what we were trying to do up front, in the core of the line. So he became a casualty.

Due to a decade of neglect, that year they really had no choice. It was similar to Hendry leaving himself in a position where he had to sign Soriano that year because they had no outfielders. If you fail to address a position that requires multiple bodies to fill for a multi-year period of time, it will bite you in the ass.

My opinion is that Tice is a bit of a meathead who wants his linemen nasty, and he viewed Williams as not tough enough. If you are going to fail as a linemen for Tice, you better do it with ferocity. Play through pain, go down swinging and all that. Williams has a little bit of a "soft" label on him.

Tackles taken after Williams in the first round:

Branden Albert (Appears to be having a Pro Bowl season)

Gosder Cherilus (A RT, but appears to have been successful)

Jeff Otah (bust)

Sam Baker (Up and down, but appears to be playing well this year)

Duane Brown (Good)

He was the third tackle taken after Long and Clady. Other than perhaps Otah (who struggled with injuries), he was far and away the worst. If he was a surefire pick at that spot, I wouldn't have a problem with it. But he wasn't, and he's a great example of Jerry Angelo's inability to find talent in the first round.

Oh, I don't deny that it was a terrible pick, but it wasn't terrible because they could've taken a good RB in the spot.

In part it certainly was. If they could have taken best player available they could have taken a better player. It wasn't as though the league mandated they take a linemen. They were forced into taking a linemen by their own ineptitude.

Williams was the consensus #3 LT that year. Anyone else would have taken him there, too.

It didn't seem like a bad pick to me at the time. Not like some of Angelo's other picks.

He was consensus, or close to consensus as the #3 LT, but not consensus to go that high in the draft. The only reason people thought he would was how desperate the Bears were for line help of any kind.

But he was a known injury risk at the time that he was picked, correct?

Either that or the Bears' front office was incompetent in doing their research on him.

I totally agree. I just posted that because it shows there was a lot of first round talent at tackle that year, and yet the Bears somehow managed to find the worst one (besides Otah).

He was a known injury risk with back issues and the Bears signed off on it anyway.

More Carimi:

"Do I feel pressure? No. I think I’ll do my thing," Carimi said. "I feel like I’m picking up speed as the season has gone along. And I think, barring any injuries, that I’m just going to keep on improving."

Some thought Carimi took a step back the last time out during the Bears’ 41-3 win over the Jaguars. He was whistled for three penalties -- including consecutive false starts -- and surrendered a sack.

"That’s the life of an o-linemen," Carimi said of the criticism. "There are other positions where you could get two sacks, you could have been blown up the whole game but if you get two sacks, you’re a hero. I can't do anything like that, really, to make up for what I did.

"Next week, I’ll just do the same thing I’ve done, without those four bad plays. And I’ll ball. I’ll play well."

Chicago Bears: Right tackle Gabe Carimi has allowed 24 pressures this year, which accounts for 38.7% of the pressure allowed by the Bears’ offense. On the other hand, his +9.5 Run Block rating is the best for right tackles.

Pretty much goes with the scouting report at draft time.
